Personally, I don't think it was a question of the bridge not being "structurally sound", I think it was mostly a question of design, as the bridge was not designed to withstand a hit on one of the supporting structures.

For example, the bridge nearest to where I live, the 25 de Abril bridge over the Tagus river in Portugal, was hit by ships several times and nothing happened, because the support structure (sorry for not using the precise technical name, as I don't know what it is) is on a concrete island that is wide enough to prevent the ships from hitting the iron structure. The last time a ship hit the bridge the ship suffered a long gash along the bow while the bridge only needed a "cosmetic" repair of the concrete base.

2 - If the ship was moving directly to the camera it would appear to be stopped.

I think you're right. I initially saw the video as the boat moving away but yes, I think I was wrong. I can see now that it is behind the support structure and not in front of it.

I guess what I thought was the engines turning on full blast is maybe water splashing up when ithe bridge gets hit?

After 9/11 would you say " the buildings collapsed because planes hit them. Problem solved. Move along."

Would you blame the towers for not being structurally sound ?

9/11 was a much different event then this. You asked where the info was and Im asking what info do you want tht hasnt been released.

I want the info where they tell us what happened. Lol. They could come out. Have a press conference and say " we've talked to the crew here is what they say happened.". I mean the power and engines went out and everyone on board just shrugged? Were there noises leading up to the power failure? Was there smoke inside the boat? Did they find a monkey wrench in some gears? When did the crew first realize something was wrong? What tipped them off? What did they do? There is a lot they aren't saying.

No one blamed the bridge for collapsing but if you are going to ignore the fact that structural soundness plays into it then good on you

I'm not sure it's possible to make a bridge that can take a hit like that. Maybe they could have had bumper type barriers around the base but in the end the bridge was hit by a boat. That's what caused it to fall.

That's what I think too.

While the ship was not close to any thing the water that was being pushed aside by the ship could move away, but when the ship was too close to the bridge support the water couldn't flow freely and started splashing around. As the ship kept on going the water was thrown even more violently and that's what we see.

Wider support "islands" would make it at least much harder to happen.

Truth is bridges are an Army Corps of Engineers responsibility but they are so unprepared they gave the job to Navy Salvage to lead. Navy salvage is so broken they had to outsource it to the US subsidiary/partner of a European firm which is chartering equipment from private companies at great expense. Equipment that's weak & small compared to what the European parent has overseas.

Another big ship got blackout today in New York ,and it happened just before bridge .

BREAKING: A NY tugboat captain has reported to @gCaptain “container ship APL QINGDAO lost power while transiting New York harbor. They had 3 escort tugs but 3 more were needed to bring her under control. They regained power & were brought to anchor near the verrazano bridge”

Two possibilities:

1 - He is an idiot;
2 - An answer "to the fullest extent of law" may not be a crime.

Edited to add a third, as I couldn't find where he may have said that:
3 - He never said it.

The owners of the ship are still potentially financially liable for the accident. They will be sued in a court of law for damages.

No mention of any "crime"?

No need for one for a claim under civil law, which is what he was talking about it would seem.

Looks like the FBI is opening an investigation.

www.washingtonpost.com...

Why now? Why didn't they open one day one?

Is their something criminal here?

Why are so many in this thread saying "we know what happened. The ship lost power and crashed. Nothing to see here."

From your link:

The FBI has opened a criminal investigation focusing on the massive container ship that brought down the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore last month — a probe that will look at least in part at whether the crew left the port knowing the vessel had serious systems problems, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

So, it sounds like they are investigating negligence by the crew, and perhaps not looking into the possibility of a cyber attack or sabotage being the cause of the power outage that happened at such a key moment.

Wouldn't you want to start an investigation like that day one? Why piddle around for a few weeks?
It's like they want any possible trails to grow cold. 👽

FBI might be setting up a decoy excuse. Deflect away from what really happened. I bet they've been on this since right that morning. 😬
