U.S. employers added a better-than-expected 263,000 jobs in April, as the nearly decade-old economic expansion shows no signs of slowing. And the unemployment rate dropped to 3.6 % — the lowest in nearly 50 years.

The US unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in 49 years.

Remember when Obama asked what Trump was going to do about the economy?.... Wave a magic wand?

I'm liking it.

Well Obama admitted himself this isn't him. As the OP stated, Obama said a magic wand would be needed. Trump said hold my beer.

Quick question...

How's this calculated?

Surely it doesn't mean only 3.6% of people don't have jobs.

Can someone please clarify?

Well hopefully this keeps up and low unemployment will cause employers to have to compete for labor, which would raise wages and strengthen the middle class.

About all that could stop this now is some loon to get in the whitehouse(in 6 years) or if the illegals keep dumping over the boarder and expand the labor market.

They have it in there, it's NPR after all.... where they refer to the 'nearly decade old economic expansion.'

Oh I'm jealous!

In the meantime, here where I live we have a far-right president who can't stop tweeting attacking the opposite party, while our unemployment rate is at 12,4%.

I wish we had a Trump working on behalf of the people as well. Sadly we got another clown misleading the masses.

What did Trump do, exactly? A lot of this has to do with the high cost of living forcing retirees to go back to work, or former stay at home spouses no longer being able to do so.

The crazy thing is he is doing this with half his brain tied behind his back dealing with Democrats obstructing and launching fake investigations at every turn. Imagine how things would be if Democrats cooperated....

I am hoping to debate someone on these fake numbers that obama loved to use. When he took 8 percent unemployment down to 4.2.

Here is reality. Our debt is larger than the GDP that is beyond socialist leaning countries like the UK.

Personal consumer debt reaches historic levels nearly every month.

Car loan defaults record high.

Record number of Americans with no savings.

So this is literally classic cooking the books bubble economy stuff.

This is backwards socialism. To give the government power to create credit and decide its rates is giving over complete control of the monetary system from the market. Who gets to carry debt is another force of government power.

No thanks. Let's talk when the report says consumer debt is an all time low and the economy is booming. The government has reached a surplus and the debt was slightly lower.

The tax cuts and a major reduction in job-killing regulations. Now where is my easy button.

Obama to Trump: 'What magic wand do you have?'

During a PBS town hall that aired Wednesday, Obama referenced Trump's promise to bring back jobs to the United States when talking about manufacturing.

"Well, how exactly are you going to do that? What exactly are you going to do? There's no answer to it," Obama said.

"He just says, 'Well, I'm going to negotiate a better deal.' Well, what, how exactly are you going to negotiate that? What magic wand do you have? And usually the answer is, he doesn't have an answer."

And for those claiming the credit should go to Obama.... seems odd he should be given credit for something he said himself wasn't possible.

But I guess it's not really fair to pick on some people's religious dogma. You're entitled to your fantasies. Carry on.

Wrong. There have always been plenty of jobs. The difference now is that it costs so much to make ends meet, people who didn't have to work before were forced to get jobs. It's not really a good thing. I'm not blaming Trump, this is the fault of the last 4 or 5 presidents. My 85 year old grandpa is currently looking for a part time job because his military retirement checks are no longer enough to get by. It's really sad.

The only people out are the ones who can't figure the whole work for a living thing out. Lots of openings around here from entry level on up. Skilled trades schools that couldn't get enough people are starting to fill up now that people realize in 2 years they can be making $70k a year.

As many above said, labor statistics are manipulated crap. They were under Obama and they still are under trump. They are as false an indicator of economic well-being for the masses as the stock exchange and gdp is. When national debt is lower, when personal debt is lower, when people have disposable income, then the economy is working. Right now, as for the last 2 decades, it’s disfuntional hell represented with fake feel good numbers.

The president is literally calling for quantative easing.

I dont understand how conservatives dont understand the complete takeover of the market by the government when they inject money from thin air. Removing regulations like underwriting in home loans is exactly what led to the collapse when debt default spiralled.

This is now just Republican vs democrat. There seems to be no longer a fiscal conservative party.
