Incidentally, just to clarify, I was personally never in Iraq during the US-led invasion or its aftermath.
My narrative above was a bit of a woozy early-morning mash-up.
However, many South African dudes with military experience were indeed contracted as mercenaries and private security (especially as the ANC was purging most whites from the military with their affirmative action policies, and ex-soldiers suddenly found themselves unemployed).

I mean storytelling is part of especially military experience (lots of time to share stories), but I never want to be accused of "stolen valor", and besides some ATS members might be interested in the real book and narrative.
