It's been awhile since I have posted, and I really miss talking to you guys

But this is a new one on me.

On our HP laptop running Win10, we are getting this message at startup. This started this week. No programs have been newly installed.

"C: Program which could cause certain applications to not function correctly. Renaming it to "C: Program1" would solve this problem."

NO idea which program this is referring to.
And another odd things, when I go to the C: drive, and Program FIles, and double click, I get a menu with which app I want to open the files with?!?!?! WTF???
On my desktop, and on any computer I have had, a double click just opens the folder.

Any clues, please?
And thanks in advance.

We are running Webroot. Do malwarebytes and CCleaner scans daily.

community.webroot.com...

If you encounter this issue, simply shutdown WRSA from the tray icon, rename "program" to "program.exe" and uninstall using a modified uninstall command since the file is in a different location with a different name: "c:program.exe" -uninstall

Reinstall using the latest build which can be obtained via your online Webroot console.

This is an issue that does not happen very often and was only seen in a couple older builds. Support continues to monitor this as well.

Thank you, and please let us know if the issue persists,

Thanks, but I'm not sure it is a WR problem at this point.

From what I have read, it may or may not be related to webroot. Other people reported other apps, such as VOiP.
How does one know WHICH program it is......

Are you able to see a folder or file on your computer that is just called "C: Program"?

Well, right now we cannot open Program Files, when you double click on that file in the C: drive, it opens awindow to ask which app to use.
I have no clue what the correct answer is. I do know that it's not a guessing game, concerned to pick the wrong thing..

I found this one for windows 7 and think that it should carry over to windows 10. The posts to look for are from "karlsnooks". The real help starts on page 4.

I get a file name warning for some folder called "C:Program" ?

Well, that was confusing to me, and most of that is above my level of comfort.....and I still don't know if there is a program called program of what is going on.

Run Malwarebytes in Safe Mode .
Then boot to normal mode .
Admin command prompt :
Chkdsk c: /f
No to force a dismount , yes to check disk on restart

sfc /scannow

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If all fails :
Download and run :
tweaking.com 's windows repair all in one .

Perhaps look at this :
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Sounds like you either have a virus or malware , or a corrupt Windows .

I cannot say what will happen , but that is the best I have .

I apologize that it was not any help.

Following the instructions in the second post on page 4, it would show if there is a file called "C: program" on your computer. Later posts have the instructions to remove it.

I'd try to explain it better, but I think that I would just end up making it more confusing.

Actually , try this first :
Windows 10 Clean Boot
If no message , it is a program causing the problem

What you have is a program that set up a temp directory called "Program"
Do you have valid folders named "Program Files" and "Program Files (X86)" ?
If the above is true , and you have another folder named "Program" then it would be safe to delete .
If no "Program" folder is in the root of C: , then something added an environment path to a folder named "Program" which does not exist .

Google "Windows 10 environment variables" .
Learn how yo remove that path from the environment variables .

C
ROGRA~1 ( c colon backslash progra tilde 1) is what we used to call an 8.3 or SFN back in the day. While your problem is not perfectly clear to me I can guarantee you should not rename your program files directory. Most likely your PATH environment variable has a problem, and an app is bitching about it.

Windows 10 is not limited to 8 bit naming .
There is no tilde .

Any idea why I cannot open the folder "program files" in C:??
Why i would be offered a choice how to open?

Also, the lappy might be 32 and net 64 bit.
I'll check tomorrow.

I was able to reproduce the issue by creating a folder at the root of drive c: and naming it program.

It has nothing to do with program files.

Screenshot of issue
imgur.com...

Using explorer open "c: program" if it has any other words or numbers you are messing with the wrong file.

When you find the program that created it, I would recommend getting rid of it entirely as that's a pretty big mistake.

Links messed up .
Or something changed the basic open with (which is near impossible for folders)

As I stated before , sounds like a massive virus or Windows is terribly corrupted .
It may come down to the tweaking.com Windows Repair All in One .

Windows Repair AIO .
Basically start the program , hands off, and ready the sacrificial chicken .
The above is a last resort .
Period. (although , that is my go to when I am all out of ideas .)

I will say I have seen program installations/upgrades that added environment variables under the Path to finish install after a boot .
If they remove the directory but not the path string , your system would look for thatb path for eternity . (or mess it up)

ADDON : It could be a one time run MRU in the registry as well .
After the system was rebooted , and the job finished , the program did not delete the MRU entry in the registry .

I know , too many if's .
There is a lot to Windows .

If the "How do you want to open this file" has the text "do you want to keep using this app" like this

imgur.com...

It's because of a program was installed that can also open the file type. Hence the "new" under one of my options.
