Anywhere else, her revelation might have been a bombshell. But no one flinched when a child psychiatrist told a conference of parents and counselors last month that she had prescribed antidepressants to children as young as 3-1/2.

Audience members at the San Diego conference, after all, were quite familiar with the concept of preschoolers on Prozac. Many of the parents in the audience have children who suffer from a debilitating form of shyness called selective mutism, one of a handful of mental disorders thought to strike children younger than 6. And several had put their kids on the drugs despite their misgivings and well-publicized concerns about the effects of antidepressants upon teenagers.

take the child to chucky cheese's or disneyworld, buy them lots of toys, give them lots of love, they won't be depressed and won't need anti depressants.

If a Dr. came and told me my 3 year old needed anti depressants I would put my foot right in his ass and sue him afterwards. Are the parents in this day an age so #ing stupid!?!?! Putting kids on anti depressants? I mean come on!!

After this thread and the one with the murder in Miami, I think I might need antiderpessants. I think these parents are nuts. On something of this magnitude consult other dr's., specialists, etc. But Christ don't put them on such medications.

Those parents should be charged with child abuse if you ask me. And the Dr. who prescribed the meds should be sued for malpractice!

Im a #ing 23 year old guy and I was prescribed an anti depressant by this Dr because he said I was depressed. The medicine made me feel like a forkin zombie and I stopped taking it after just one day and I will never take them ever again. Thats what people want kids to be? A bunch of mindless zombies?

Yup, easier to dope them than raise them.

I have no idea how one would be able to diagnose a 3 year old? Children are such visceral creatures, you can expect them act accordingly.

I was diagnosed with ADHD, and told that I needed ritilin to control by hyperactivity and lack of focus. Poping pills every day made me an absolute drone to the system. Untill I grabbed that bottle and threw it in the garbage.

Probably the best thing you ever did. I think these medications are dangerous. What nobody is allowed to be depressed anymore? All of a sudden anyone whos sad or hyper has to be medicated with this #? Gimme a break.

Come on! You should all know that pharmecutical companies goal is to make you a life-long dependent on their products. They are just starting younger and younger.

Yeah, ritalin is another one. BIG fight with the wife on this one. We gave our son a choice and he said "no more". My youngest though is SOOOOOO hyper she actually needs it to function.

Yeah but some kids are just like that. They eventually grow out of it when they get older. You know how many "hyper" kids I went to school with? Many. And now thet are just normal adults. They didnt get medicated.

I agree.

Instead of helping face my problems with lack of Focus, through educational methods that would help me cope in schools, they just took the easier, money making step and fed me pills.

This is a perfect example of people looking for a 'quick fix' to their problems. As worldwatcher posted above parents should focus on loving their child and sharing special moments with them. It seems people these days look for a convenient way out of trying times instead of applying common sense to the situation. I would never give a child this type of medication nor would I take it myself.

I'm anti-pills because I don't believe in them.
