curious whats the state of the Iraqi air force now?
since saddam decided it would be better off burying them insted of using them.

what air craft do they have or getting

I bet they will only get US airplanes for the next 50 years if iraq doesnt fall apart. I think the old buried iraqi planes will just get dumped.

Depends on how much they trust the future goverments. There is a possibillity that iraq will turn into a puppet state and then the US will give them fairly high tech aircraft like the F35. For now i think they will give them the newest versions of the F16.

I think what white elephants are in Iraq's air force are the least of the US armed forces concerns about Iraq at the moment to be honest.


I think they would never be given anything with which to be remotely competitive with the USAF/USN [just in case], so in comparison to their neighbours, would probably lag technologically.

Well, apart from Iran at the moment, and they are concentrating on modern SAMs from what I gather (which would still enable them to nullify any threat posed by an Iraqi airforce.

AS well as f-16 i reckon that the iraqi airforce will get some f/a-18s and maybe even a few f-15s. Enough to make them competative with any country that they have a border with but not powerful enough to be a threat to any us millitary "intrests" in that area.

That's largely because of two factors.

1) they've traditionally been up against US Military gear, whether trying to fight us, or dealing with all the stuff we sold the previous Iranian government.

2) They've simply not had the correct training in tactics to use what they have properly.

I'm doubting we'll even see much Iraqui air force for some years. Right now they're preoccupied with building up a respectable enough army to control thier own country. Since the primary threat there is relatively low tech insurgents without any air assets, I imagine ground attack aircraft will be thier primary requisition.

I wouldn't make such a claim that is not backed up by any statistics. Of course having the right equipment is only half the equation, tactics and training comprise the other half. Now, If Iraqis are trained at a decent level and given quality aircraft they can be a match for any of their Arab neighbors.

Iranians will always think Iraqi pilots are bad..

The new Iraq would be lucky to get F-16s F/A-18s and especially F-15s

I would rather sell them F-5s maybe and F-4s since they are in process of rebuilding the new air force. The first 3 i mentioned are too good for them at this stage.

F-16s are a decent all-round choice, as are F-18s. (Though the F-16 is a more popular export) F-5s and F-4s are unlikely, as the F-5 barely ever entered production, and the F-4 has been out of production for a long time. F-35s are quite likely, due to their increased focus on CAS, and the fact the Iraquii air force is unlikely to be buying any new aircraft for a few years.

Suppose just the F-16 and F/A-18s but i wouldnt sell them the F-15 Eagles

Not yet anyway, Thats why i thought the F-4s should be sold to them instead.

They currently own fewer than 40 aircraft (helicopters, piper cubs, troop transports) but only about 6 of them are capable of flying. No word on any future purchases yet, but it's something that's going to have to be decided soon with the US talking about pulling out in the near future.
