Secret poll: Iraqis back attacks

RAW STORY

A "secret military poll commissioned by senior officers" from the Ministry of Defence reveals that the majority of Iraqis support the insurgent attacks against British and American troops, according to an exclusive story in The Sunday Telegraph. /96vb8

Among other findings, the poll also concludes that 82 percent are against the continued occupation and that millions of Iraqis believe that suicide attacks are justified.

This seems to contradict what is coming out of Washington, and London.

The so-called Insurgents[Atually Partisans] are supported by a majority of the Iraqis.

An even larger majority of Iraqis do not want the occupation to continue.

No big surprise to people that are able to put the shoe on the other foot, but will be a mystery to Westerners who believe the propaganda the media feeds them.

Well that wasnt very much of a secret poll was it?

I love how you talk about propaganada in the media and use the media as a source classic. Propaganda goes both ways for and against the War. Also nice touch saying westerners we all know only the West media has propaganda and all News in the East is the straight dope
No bias or slant

LOL! ...’secret poll’…’commissioned by senior officers’..!

Only the data is ‘declassified’….. I can not wait until the report in its’ entirety is ‘declassified’ and disclosed…...

I truly hope it wasn't written in 'secret code'!!

That's not much higher than the poll quoted by the Department of Defense a couple of months ago.

defenselink.mil

Half of those polled said there was no excuse for attacks against coalition personnel, while 40 percent said there is a justification and 10 percent saying they don't know.

Obviously the creators of this report are anti-military unscrubbed filthy hippies with an axe to grind against Mom and Apple Pie, why everyone knows the Iraqi people were just delighted with being bombed and invaded, and everyone also knows the insurgency is entirely composed of nefarious foreign agents from Iran/Syria/Berkely/Canada...

What? It was the UK's Ministry Of Defence? (backs away slowly....)

...Seriously, this report ought to give the purveyors of Iraq War happy-talk reason to pause. We've rid these people of a brutal dictator, yes, unfortunately we've given them chaos and poverty in exchange. The war itself was well executed, unfortunately we have failed to win the peace.

This ongoing conflict, driven by extremmist ideology and fantasies of "global dominance", is becoming a gut-wrenching reflection of the failure of that ideology. We must defeat our own extremists at home if we wish to defang those abroad. Instead, we are supplying them new recruits every day. Forty-five percent of a nation, if this report is to be taken at face value.

That ought to be a sobering thought.

Wow, you got a lot of information from a rather vague article.

Lets not have yet another thread about: “The big bad ol’ military/government has done everything wrong; Oh!..but look at (ie. this poll) what they just did and may have gotten right….what if..on and on..discussion?”

Seriously.

Sample polling has many flaws and the creditability of the ‘findings’ lay solely at the feet of those that conduct polls and interpret data etc. etc.

The information contained in the article if it were right, left, center... still should be immediately called into to question especially based on what is currently provided as information. The largest heavily experienced polling organizations with the best available talent do not get the correct information out of opinion polls.

The report was commissioned by the British MoD. An Iraq ‘university research team’ (whatever that is) conducted the poll in August 2005.
Reuters

Note: (and a more interesting possibility)

Opinion polls also influence the ‘general opinion’ when made public (leaked),

....perhaps ‘the mice were in charge of the cheese’ on this one…maybe not? Fishy timing with a possible announcement coming soon about increasing the UK troop levels in Afghanistan. Hmm.

Be it the poll is propaganda or not, if it's true, I wouldn't be surprise at all. Just tell me, would you like to be invaded by another foreign power who promise you peace and prosperity for the future? I doubt you'd say yes.

They blast into your country with their tanks and planes and after that they tell you: "vote!".

I doubt there is a single nation in the world that wishes to be 'liberated' in the same way Iraq recently was.

BTW- How can it be liberation if the nations were not occupied by foreign forces?

Iraq now needs liberation from the foreign occupiers, but they did not before Bush ordered the Invasion.

He,he, many other [ oppress people in their countries] after the fiasco of Iraq are telling US [thanks but not thanks] we don't need your help we rather get rid of our bad government ourselves and perhaps have a better shot at [Democracy] our style and not US shove down our throats style.

Funny what liberation and democracy can do for a country.

In other words, "the poll did not get results that meet my preconceptions, therefore the poll must be wrong." The degree of self-deception necessary to support this war never ceases to amaze me. In a way I envy the ability to make onesself believe what one wants to believe despite all the evidence. It's quite a neat trick...

First in this thread i see other people pointing to polls from the DOD that say that the numbers arent that much higher. which means that a more effective argument for the anti war side is to use the DOD poll anyway.

Secondly that other poll did not release numbers of people polled or error margins or demographics. Still all I see is both sides playing at non partisanship as a thinley veiled attempt to accuse the other of doublethink. note that the higher of two polls say 45% justify attacks. Does that mean 55% dont justify attacks??

lets cut the BS here ya? use the DOD poll until we get the rest of the information on the other poll. isnt the DOD poll just as damning (despite the way they spin the numbers)? I also noticed that the data flaw is glossed over or ignored many other news reports. All im asking for is the poll size.

IF im wrong and someone has it , I apologize. Please hand me my bottom immediately.

depends on where the polling was at? was it in the Anbar province only maybe? figures. it it was with the Kurds or the Shiites they may oppose the occupation but they would support the stayin of troops until they can get their feet back up and the Kurds would not support the attacks on the Americans who have protected them since the early 90s.

Inferring is what you are doing and precisely the danger I am commenting about.

You have inferred incorrectly.

You believe you can speak to my position on the war in Iraq?

Who is it that really suffers from “self deception”.

Who makes overt statements such as “despite all the evidence” yet comments on a ‘poll’ which contains none…pfft.

That is your “neat trick”.

I commented on the validity of the poll, period. No side taken.

For all you know, based upon the information given, the pollsters polled were all Chinese immigrants, Spanish journalists, insurgents or primary school children…the list is infinate...heck it might have been one person polled end of story!

Bottom line is you don’t know.

Hence my point...would not a prudent person:

Well the first half of the poll tells me they are ready for us to leave...

But the 45% supporting attacks on coalition forces, makes me think these people may never be ready to run things alone. Atleast its not yet the majority with that crazy mind set.
