Experts say Mardi Gras beads contain toxic metals and chemicals

NEW ORLEANS -- "Made in NOLA" -- that's where health and environmental experts want Mardi Gras throws to come from.

They say beads from China are made from toxic waste the U.S. ships off, and they're concerned it ends up in our bodies, landfills and water supply. After the parade is over, doctors say the health hazard is just beginning.

"There isn't a system in the body that isn't affected by lead," said Dr. Howard Mielke, a Tulane toxicologist who has been studying lead levels in the city for many years.

They found lead and an array of toxic and cancer-causing metals and chemicals, including bromine, chlorine, cadmium, arsenic, tin, phthalates and mercury.

The doctors say beads are safer when they are new, and more dangerous as they begin to deteriorate over time


Of course, everyone is usually so drunk, they could care less
Except that little kids always want to put stuff in their mouths, so that is not good


They do have beads made from safer sources, which costs more, yet they are made in Africa...

The environmental group the Louisiana Bucket Brigade is so concerned it sells Zombeads. Those are throws locally made from Crowley rice, NOLA wood shutters, coffee burlap voodoo dolls and ceramic doubloons.

The beads are handcrafted of hardened paper, supplying jobs in Africa.

What about giving jobs to the good folks in Louisiana???
Out sourcing jobs for Mardi Gras bead necklaces of all things...why not supply jobs for locals that actually understand the meaning behind the necklaces?

Wait...we ship off our toxic waste to China? Do they pay us for it since they use it to turn a profit selling it back to us, or do we pay them for accepting our hhazardous materials? What in the H - E - Double Hockey Sticks is going On here?? It's kind of an act of war...on behalf of the Chinese government AND our own if they knew about it... Jesus! EVERYBODY is trying to kill us! What happened to good old plastic? They need all their plastic to make fake rice out of it or what? Just strange man...
