And to all of you that responded that yes the unions are responsible for the 40 hour work week, job safety, overtime pay and such but are obselete as they do nothing for you now, I ask you this....
What has George Washington done for you lately?
You enjoy and celebrate the freedoms he and his men fought and sacrificed for but then admit to enjoying the things the unions have fought and died for but declare us obsolete and ridicule us.
I want to thank all my union brothers and sisters for showing their union pride posting as well as our non union brethren.
I respect all of your views and opinions, even the wrong ones lol....

Now here is where I think you are wrong. We do not believe we are better than anybody else. I kinda understand why you think that, but it is wrong. We don't.
Ridiculous demands and wages. What ridiculous demands? Seriously name some or just repeating what you have heard others say.
Wges.... $50k a year is ridiculous? Sorry if you don't make that. If you make more than that, why call it ridiculous? Only you should make that much?
You are right, nobody owes us anything. A fair days pay for a fair days work.... too much too ask for?
These are familiar names: AFSCME ($60.6 million), NEA ($53.5 million), IBEW ($44.4 million), UAW ($41.6 million), Carpenters & Joiners ($39.2 million) and SEIU ($38.3 million).

Good for you. The thing is, most of us don't have hatred for non union workers. You make good money doing what you enjoy, more power too you. There are a lot of non union skilled trades jobs that pay well.
I hear you Man . We All gotta make a Living some way or another , I just happen to Love my Independence more than Money ...
What I don't like is union bashers and especially those with no experience of unions.
As far as work, I've had good years and bad years. And yes I pay dues whether I'm working or not. 43.00 a month. We pay another set of dues when we work. Like 16 a week I think.
It's almost hard to walk away from when I am not working. I made $29,800 in 2 months back in '09. Didn't work the rest of the year. That was a lot of hours doing what I enjoy. There has been a time I was off all year. But you get a job like that and it makes it hard to walk away from. Like I said its no get rich quick scheme.

Re: Why is it that union supporters can only list things unions accomplished many decades ago, but nothing recently?
Hint: It's because the time and place for unions has long since passed.
Response- Well in Philly yesterday we see what unions are achieving recently- one of the largest union bosses in Philly, a union city, and his goons all arrested for beating non-union workers who competed with them by bidding on jobs. This group proudly called themselves union THUGS. Also arrested were union members who allegedly burned down a church that had given repair work to non-union contractors.
So you see, unions are still taking care of their own even today, preventing fair competition in the work place, lower costs of goods and services to the public, not to mention near bankrupting government at all levels. US Unions, still contributing after all these years... for the good of all (all in the union that is). And with strong government protection by the Nat. Labor Relations Board who must be proud of the good things unions in Philly are doing even in our age.edit on 20-2-2014 by retsdeeps1 because: (no reason given)
I have a hard time watching this and not getting terribly angry. Those 123 young women and 23 men who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire on March 25, 1911, deserve to be remembered. But we're watching it happen all over again in developing countries that supply Walmart, Gap, and other marketing and retail giants.
At 2:00, you'll see the cascading effects that the fire had on workers' rights and eliminating sweatshops in the United States. But watching it happen all over again in other parts of the world at 3:00 is heartbreaking. It was the same exact circumstances as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, word-for-word. At 4:24, how do they calculate the “value” of a human life? And the images at 6:40 — really? All for a $26 pair of pants?

where do you think the laws covering workers came from?
