So, we all know and love Total Recall. (The original. What remake?)
But a lot of people think that the main character, Douglas Quaid, gets the girl in the end, walks off into the sunset, and everything is fine.
Nope. He's out of his mind.
Dig this: When they're first jacking him into the Recall machine, they ask him what type of woman he'd like, and for a second or so, you see Melina,
the girl he meets in the dream. One of the technicians says, "Blue sky on Mars, that's a new one!". And by the end of it, there's a blue sky on
Mars.
So... What I figure REALLY happened: He murdered his wife. Those brain-butchers really screwed him up good. When she tried to talk sense into him, he
slipped into a state of psychosis, believed she was out to kill him, and his mind made up a justification.
If Cohaagen wanted him to find Quato, why does he have Richter try to kill him? Why does his so-called alter-ego Hauser tell him to remove the
tracking device if Hauser actually works for Cohaagen all along?
The part of the film where the Doctor speaks to him and tries to convince him that he's having a schizoid embolism, and Quaid just thinks it's a
trick? What did he have to go on? A single drop of sweat. Maybe he was nervous about another lawsuit. Maybe he was nervous about the psychotic
Austrian bodybuilder with a Claridge Hi-Tec/Gonzc GA nine millimeter. What-ever the case be, I don't think he was trying to trick Quaid. See,
Cohaagen's plan according to the delusion was that he needed Quaid to find the mutants' leader, Quato. Poisoning him wouldn't help with that. So,
by deduction, the only other option is that Quaid really WAS crazy.
So, being unable to handle the truth, Quaid shoots the doctor, and his lovely wife. Then, he goes and finds the mutants' leader, and then they are
raided. I believe at this point, Quaid is being sieged by the actual police. When he's captured and brought before "Cohaagen", he's booked,
incarcerated, and lobotomized.
The last shot of the movie, a white light that grows increasingly intense... That's the last thought Douglas Quaid will ever have.
He's like Rosemary Kennedy now. Sitting in some mental institute. His wife would probably come and visit him, if he hadn't have murdered her.
Lesson is, don't go to Rekall. Those people are brain butchers.
