My country and its people are labelled as racists, and i have had enough!

Ok while I agree that most Australians aren't racist and frankly after all I've been through with racist neighbours of mine in Sydney's west I'm tired of it. Tired of having to listen to it and put up with it. If you're racist here there's not really anything anyone does and if you take matters into your own hands lets just say it wont end well.

I can understand why so many people are frustrated with Australia's image and well I cant blame them (Remember those Indian students that were murdered brutally not to mention that video of where those two French girls were verbally abused). I have to say a lot of my aussie mates are pretty trustworthy and pretty great friends in general, however we all know that a few rotten apples spoil the bunch. I wouldn't worry about people calling aussies racist after all it's their opinion and they can think whatever they want doesn't mean you have to make each and every person that labels Australia racist happy.

Mate, I am Australian and if you can't see the huge problem we have with racism in this nation then you are deluding yourself.

It is true, one could argue, that we are held to higher standards than most, but that is the lot of a nation considered a lucky country and dream destination.

Barely a day goes by where I don't hear a racial slur by a workmate, a friend, or a stranger. These are generally decent people but there is a climate of allowance when it comes to this issue.

We need more people to stand up and say no to this scourge. Not to belittle our country but to make it truly the nation we like to delude ourselves it is.

What exactly are you proud of when you look at the flag? The Union Jack representing the colonial power that violently stole this land from its native peoples? The flying of it by our military in wars of aggression against peoples in Asia that have done nothing to us? The use of it on our ships when we turn away desperate asylum seekers (aka human beings, including children, fleeing lands we have often helped destroy) and relocate them to prisons on Pacific Islands we bully?

Not a racist nation? Please! People here are generally good but when we continue to allow our government to sully our name we must take responsibility for it.

I will never understand jingoistic nationalistic pride. People are people. Nations are simply the means by which power divides and conquers, to keep us enslaved.

You seem to have fallen for it hook, line, and sinker.

In America the left likes to push the racists agenda. It serves to divide and conquer. It's old and most people know it's just a selling pitch for the ignorant masses. For the most part we just ignore them.

Since WWII every new wave of immigrants to this country gets negatively racially stereotyped. It was Italians then the Greeks then the Turks, then the Vietnamese, then the ... now it is the Indians and Sudanese. Just give it 5 years and it wont be an issue anymore. As soon as they produce a comedian and television chef it will stop. The Indians have one but he is still new but I bet that the racism against them will stop soon. The Sudanese have a way to go. As a non-Anglo Australian I have to say that there are a very few racist Australians but not as much as the lazy media try to make out, they are just after a story that will get people riled up, this is easy pickings for them.

I always thought Australians were brave people. I don't think I could live with the gigantic bugs that you all do! You all conquer the spiders the size of dinner plates (and all their friends!) who wear body armor and carry all manner of weaponry!

I am one of the crowd who never heard the racism bit though..

I've a friend who went to Sydney in early January, with a view to live there for a couple of years until her visa runs out, she's from the U.K. In an email to me she says that she's never heard so much racism in her life, mainly against muslims and aborigines, she says racism is widespread beyond anything she's seen anywhere, she's not the type to exaggerate either. So, what am I meant to think when a trusted friend is personally seeing this at first hand?

They aren't the most rascist but the history of any country that has been scared by Imperial rule is apparent to those who aren't privileged by it's modern societal norms.
Europeans are 9% of the world population and by 2073 it will dwindle to 3%. All non-white people to include some groups of people who identify as white have been victimized by other Europeans. Until Europeans stop taking credit in history for things they didn't do and attempt to deal with the history of geneocide, warfare, disease it's inflicted upon the non-white people of the world many people will continue to assume all "whites" are such even if that isn't the case. The genetic signature for Europeans doesn't appear on earth until 6-7k years ago. Yet you will find science bending over backwards and outright lying in an attempt to include Europeans in ancient history. European civilization destoryed the global African community. The ancient Mongolians who invaded India and Asia did not found those civilization or build the megalithtic structures. They came much later. The Xia and Shang were the Africans who established the first recorded dynasties of China. History needs to be taught in proper context so that the evils of the past are not covered up and look upon with a sense of pride. It should be a source of shame.

I have three friends from Oz, all three asked an American point of view of Australians. ALL THREE were shocked I didn't say 'racist' in there. I really believe your MSM is toying with you and trying to guilt you into thinking that the whole world thinks your racist and evil when really the outside world thinks of very limited things when it comes to our Aussie cousins.

1) Kangaroos and Koalas
2) Accents
3) Shrimps, barbies, and any combination thereof.
4) (This could just be me) Australian Footie ZOMG what a great game!
5) All your wildlife is going to kill us
6) Friendly people
7) Beer

Equating Aussies with racist is like equating a Britt with undignified, and a Canuck with rude, and a Yankee with discreet use of military force. It just doesn't happen!

Well much like Canada, Australia has been complicit in the genocide of Native folk for the last...400 years, give or take a century..

So I can see why it happens, but I don't quite understand it anymore. Mind you our problems in Canada are far different than yours in Australia, but suffice to say that a whole culture has died in the name of creating out nations and that's just not cool.

But to blanket a whole nation as racist, for events that occurred hundreds of years ago, regardless of the outcome or circumstances is just silly.

You may or may not know... Im a first generation off the rez Siksika... Blackfeet. Half the rez is in Canada the other half in Montana in the US. My dad and grandfather were of the militant anti BIA anti Fed anti WHITE ( and anti black for that matter, though for other reasons) flavor. In my late 20's ( Im in my 40's now) I started my involvement with tribal issues and etc. I took a different stance than many... I can not blame the ancestors of one "race" for what their ancestors DID or what is happening now. I do NOT support reparations nor having folks pay my way through grants and "Minority" funds/entitlements. This created dependence and resentments that flow in both directions.
My dad had a problem with blacks in this country whining and still being slaves in the most strict sense.. owned by the federal govt through dependence on programs and etc. HE said it was damnable for one to smear the blood of their ancestors on themselves to gain money or property. I agree wholeheartedly. The government keeps slaves that does keep up divisions and prevent unity... they promote hate between folks. Its what is happening in Australia as well. Indigenous folks by and large buy into the victim mentality. Lord knows I have enough family that does.. and it creates hate along with numerous social repercussions.
The world looks on and condemns one "race" due to the actions of their ancestors.. and PC lives on. In the long run, racism and political correctness BOTH prevent any unity and creates more generations of victim mentality sufferers than the original damnable deed would have or did.

It's very rare to hear anyone say 'all (insert group here) are (insert insult here)'.

Maybe 'Australians are racist', but can you realistically ever hear 'All Australians are..'?

This is a completely new thing to me, though - admittedly, I don't know many Australians, I don't know much about Australia, and I have heard all kinds of stereotypes, but I have never heard that Australians are supposedly racist. It wouldn't even make sense, considering how many kinds of people live in Australia, and how it's basically no different than other western countries from what I know.

Is this really a stereotype, or did you make it up? Have you heard someone say those exact words in real life?

Where do you usually hear people say this kind of ignorant stuff anyway? It makes no sense to claim that all of -any- country's inhabitants are racist, so only a really illogical creting could even hold this kind of weird, erroneous and insulting opinion.

What I have heard are things like, there are Kangaroos and Koalas in Australia, Australians love beer, Australians have a thick, funny-sounding accent, Australia's cities have beautiful architecture, like that opera house, there are indigenous people living in Australia that might struggle with racism of some kind, Australia has very strict politically correct rules, Didgeridoos are not supposed to be allowed to be manufactured by just anyone, etc.

But I NEVER heard the stereotype that Australians would specifically be more racist than anyone else. If true - I mean, if it's true that people say this kind of stuff - it sounds very sad, and I am sorry to hear that. I would never have thought anyone has a reason to say something like that about Australians, of all people.
