I sopped watching mainstream TV several years ago, don't miss it one bit.

I only liked social experiment shows and history, and those I can stream after a series is over with no commercials.

Commercials and news are the main reasons I cannot stand to be brainwashed by the television. What to hate/fear and what products will remove the hate and fear or at least the symptoms. We are all a bit too evolved to fall for this anymore I feel.

Gives me more time to go for a walk and meet new people!

I have what I like to call T.V. A.D.D.
Several year ago I realized I just couldn't sit and watch anything on t.v. for any length of time, even a show I liked. I had to get up and take a break after 15 minutes or so because I became to restless.

I have a pretty decent attention span. I don't have trouble paying attention to anything else except maybe my spouse

I can sit and read a thousand page book from start to finish and wonder where the time went, but 15 minutes watching T.V. seems like hours and hours have dragged on.

I haven't had a television in my home since December of 2007. No point.

I'm with you, OP. I like Deadliest Catch, Shippings Wars and Storage Wars Texas, but as far as watching shows, the only show that my family watches together is The Walking Dead. I just cannot stomach any of the lame shows out there these days. If I can catch some of the retro shows on, like M*A*S*H*, Nash Bridges, Andy, Married With Children, etc., -I watch them. I wish we could erect our own TV stations and make our own shows; Maybe try and get back something that we lost. But the people who control that stuff will do their best to keep that from happening.

And the one thing that gets me is all them damn cooking shows, and even how the news has all those people cooking on them! I just can't handle that crap at all. It's all a bunch of yuppies I tell ya!

There are only a few tv show's that I can stand to watch myself. We mostly have it on to "babysit" the dogs when we aren't home. And then it is turned on to "MeTV" That channel shows all the old shows, from Rawhide to The Brady Bunch. Sometimes even H.R. Puff n Stuff, which is flipping hilariously bad to watch now.

Mostly I'm a movie junkie. We have a DVD collection to rival a rental store!

It has been 22 years since we got rid of cable tv and neither of us has ever missed it. My dear husband was an addict, had to have a tv on even if he wasn't watching it and would watch ANYTHING that was on....sigh... I didn't grow up with tv in the house. My parents never caught the addiction so I grew up with radio, games and books for entertainment. I never could stand all the commercials telling me how inadequate or out of "style" I am.
But the most irritating thing I've found about not being a tv watcher is that all the tv people use references from some commercial or show...even though I tell them, "I don't watch tv." they usually say, "Well, I don't watch it either..." and then proceed to relate an entire show or commercial!

There was a brief time when we had cable that some of the PBS science and exploration shows had a goodly amount of content but these days when I do go to watch something along those lines they have about 15 minutes of content and the rest is repetition, same for the "conspiracy" shows, 30 minutes used up repeating what the previous segment already presented....like everyone is mentally challenged and can't get it unless it is repeated endlessly! Perhaps that's why I prefer radio, even though there are commercials, there's not the "repeat endlessly" routine.

This is because television is always aimed at it's target audience.
This audience is known as consumers.
So the chances are that as you grow old and stop being a good consumer that the television will just stop "speaking to you or your needs".
As you grow older we cement in a world view that becomes increasingly inflexible and televisions propaganda no longer has any effect. We know what we know and all the tv in the world won't change that. Television programmers know this and instead of wasting time and energy trying win back older viewers, it concentrates on attracting new ones.
It focuses on children and young adults...the demographic that hasn't heard all the lies and twisted sales pitches yet.
At least this is how I see it.

Well television's days are numbered then because most teens and young adults don't watch much TV, they are internet, social media and cell phone users. I suppose the ones in lower class inner city suburbs do watch a lot of TV, maybe that is why the IQ level of the programming has dropped so much?

A lot of young people DO watch quite a bit of telly...whether it's 'most' or not, I wouldn't know.

A great many programmes are geared towards teenagers or young people (16 - 30 age group) - indeed, that's what seems to be putting a lot of viewers off, the crappy, banal element (pop music channels, reality TV, etc.).

Programmers seem to think this is the only target audience that matters, even though the majority of the population is 40/50 plus.

They wouldn't be doing it if teenagers weren't interested, would they?

I have a flatscreen, but I mostly use it for movies.

I haven't had cable or basic TV since 1998. I can't believe the junk and horrible things that our kids watch these days. I find the smarter individuals around today do not watch TV. (few and far between)

Good for you, good for anyone that does not . It's a fad and will die off soon enough. If electricity was to vanish from society (EMP, Lack of funding, ETC.) What would the masses do? Wake up? Start riots?

Doesn't seem much a life, one would have sitting inside, on their ass, not moving around, watching crap that may lower IQ. it's a bit sickening.

I still love the movie Idiocracy by Mike Judge, a classic of where this nation is headed. Sooner than later.

Damn that Clevon

So you do watch some shows Op just seems like you don't wanna be trapped in front of the tube all day.

Thats why i don't have Cable TV.. or any paid tv service.. havent in years. I can get everything I wanna watch.. ( read that as I can get everything on cable) through the internet for free so i only watch those shows I like when i want to see them. Almost every movie or TV show is online someplace for free.

I don't watch tv.
The only set in this house is some massive prehistoric throwback that dates back to the days of the picture tube.
It's not some modern smart set.
The only thing it collects is dust...and it's pretty good in that respect.
Around the dinner hour is the only time I am subjected to the boob-tube but since I am always the cook, I choose what gets put on while I am down there.
Needless to say I always (to the disappointment of everyone) choose some digital muzak station and leave a classic oldies station on. Drives them up the wall!
Aside from that I just don't bother with it anymore.
There are only seven plotlines anyways.

en.wikipedia.org...

It's always some variation of those tropes so there's literally nothing new under the sun.
Reality TV was the last straw for me and around the time of the first Big Brother, I just tuned out and haven't looked back.
To be honest...I have no use for it...my life is busy enough that I would have to neglect my duties either at home or work even if I were inclined to watch it for an hour or two...something else would invariably suffer for it.
