I' not really sure which forum this would best fit in; if this isn't it, feel free to move, mods.
Since moving to this area in 1975, I have had a doppelganger who has caused a bit of confusion on more than one occasion!
While taking an evening class at a local community college, people would start talking to me as if they knew me. Being new to the town, my
confusion was obvious, and they would apologize, saying they thought I was somebody else.
Three years later, I had met quite a few people in my new home town. It was not unusual for someone I couldn't quite place to say 'hi', maybe
engage in a little small talk. Not wanting to be rude, I would try to appear as if I remembered them.
One day, a friend asked why I was so distant at the local all night restaurant at 'bar thirty'. They tried to engage 'me' in conversation as I
sat with a group of friends, but 'I' acted like I hardly new them!
I assured my friend that I was not there; I don't drink and was certainly not having breakfast with the bar crowd. I got the impression that my
friend thought I was being deceptive......
Instances like this would happen every few months, and then seemed to quit for a couple of years, until......
I broke my left foot, and my HMO required I see a doctor in a neighboring town 30 miles away. As I was walking into the clinic, a man greeted me
warmly, asking how the heck I'd been, long-time-no-see, etc. I was keeping up my end of the conversation, trying not to be rude, while desperately
searching my memory for who this guy was.
After some polite small talk,I said I needed to get to my appointment. He said he'd noticed I broke my foot
again, only it was the other
foot last time. He bid me good day, and said not to be a stranger- stop by again soon.
I'd never had a broken bone in my life before this accident, and I got the sense that this man knew 'me' quite well!
About three years later, my doppelganger seemed to have moved back to my home town. People who knew me very well began to have encounters with
'me' again, and would later ask why 'i' was so distant towards them, thinking maybe they had offended 'me' in some way.
I began explaining that I had a doppelganger. The thing I find odd is how we both seem to have a preference for an unusual style of eye-glass
frame, and we seem to wear the same hair styles. If I get a new hairstyle, my doppelganger sports the same one!
Four or five years ago, my 'twin' came into a store where my best friend works. After a warm greeting, it became obvious that 'she' wasn't
'me', so my friend told her about the identical resemblance.
It appears that she, too, has been plagued by the same phenomenon, but hadn't considered a doppelganger before.
What I find most unusual is we both have the same name, only she ends hers with an 'E' and I use an 'A'.
I wish my friend had thought to get some contact information. I would love to see my mirror image!
If you have any theories on doppelgangers, or a similar story, I would love to hear it!
P.S. At one time my doppelganger was in a relationship with a person of a different ethnicity, and their public display of affection caused some
confusion for one of my friends who witnessed it, since I am very happily married!
