Thsi is not a rant persay, it's more a rant of observation. Some of the members of this site are way to emoticon emotional. I mean ATS can't make them happy. Old emoticons, new emoticons. Colorless emoticons, colored emoticons. I think some want be happy until their allowed to draw their own emoticons. Here's an abstract thought...just do away with them all together. No emoticons at all. we could have an online ATS emoticon funeral. We could even invite Westboro to sling insults as we lay them to rest. Fly all of our upside down American flags at half mast, hell we could even take up a collection and start an "Emoticon Memorial" a wall so to speak where the emoticon faithfull can go and be emotional. Where's the crying emoticon? Oh I see it, so many to choose from.

little harsh there...
it just might be with the shock of the new forum people fixated on emoticons as a way to hang onto the familiar? Can't blame anyone for that. Change is hard.

LOL maybe it's because a lot of us are older and don't like change? So we are tolerating the new site, but want something of the past to hang on to?

Plus a lot of the old ones "did" stuff. I can't shoot anything now.
Oh, but I guess that is more politically correct.

I agree, let me take the time this am offer an apology for our banter of the other night. I came across as a crass arsehole. But I do agree, about the emoticons. I have never understood the fact your writing down your words...then attach a Pic to them for effect. I guess I'm emoticon useless and dont even know it!! I shall try in the future to embrace the emoticon ritual. I allways sucked at pictionary as well.

I think the new ones are a little small and tricky to see what they are and therefore pointless.

But habits are habits ;P

fair play , American flag obscurity guy' ;D, all things considered I can be a real dick too sometimes, so it takes one to know one , so thanks for that, I suppose so much is lost in translation , things can appear more heated than they seem, emoticon or otherwise I don't think they would make a difference to the mad ambiguity and misinterpretation that can sometimes happen

thanks again

The problem is, NOTHING matches, or improves upon the old emoticons! :-)

They actually added something to the text. They EMOTED!

Both the new sets SUCK in comparison! :-))

However. I appreciate the incredible amount of work SO has put into the new site. Overrall, I like it. Not that it matters what I think in the grand scheme. Just my two cents.

If your happy and you know it, emote a lot!

If your happy and you know it, emote a lot!

If your happy and you know it and you really want to show for the love of God emote a lot

If I might reply on a perfectly serious note here for Emoticons and why I think they're important?

90% of the time they are decoration or a little flourish for fun...but I just wrote a note a short time ago to someone that was asking a very direct and serious thing. If read wrong for tone, if could seem outright challenging and almost combative. With an Emoticon to show I was in no way intense or serious faced in asking? The very same words, hopefully, will bring a valuable answer to something I've wanted to know and not making someone feel uncomfortable.

For us social oafs who lack the fine skills of nuance? it's a real useful tool to show tone.

Agreed.

Some things dont convey well in just text and a little emote icon at the end can make all the difference between sounding offensive or rude and joking and fun.

Anyone who wants the old smilies (the original classic ones) back should take a look at this:

ATS 5.3 Tweaks (greasemonkey script)

The link in the opening post is broken but this should work.

lol... You mean like the thumbs up above yours?

yeah.. I suppose everything has a balance in life and even fun stuff can get a little extreme..but then, the world would be an awfully dull grey place without the fun stuff, wouldn't it?

Like Phil Spector made his place in pop music history with his "Wall of Sound"

I will strive to make my place in history with my "Wall of Yellow Thumbs"!

Or, maybe not.....

Well just one....more.....little thumbs up.......

ahhhhhhh..........

That felt good.
