American Conservatives Take Aim at the 'War on Christmas'

The saleswoman at the department store counter where I occasionally buy ties is Jewish; she's a lovely, tranquil woman who, I suspect, doesn't care much about the newborn king.
Still, she endures with good grace the endless loop of treacly Christmas music her store begins playing around Halloween. I bait her about it from time to time, and all she offers is a slightly weary smile.

My guess is she looks at Christmas the same way I do: Everybody's a little more cheerful at this time of year, and it's nice, and neither of us thinks of her little ties-and-gifts counter as a battleground.

From other quarters, however, Americans are being assured a religious war is underway.

Conservative mouthpieces and news outlets warn that "the right to celebrate Christmas is under attack," and that "challenges to religious freedom are taking place."

Satanists are apparently involved. (Like the ones who, according to Glenn Beck's conservative blog The Blaze, joined with atheists in the effort to remove a nativity scene from Florida's state Capitol building.)

Abortionists may also be involved, too, at least figuratively. Earlier this month, Sarah Palin spoke out against "those who would want to try to abort Christ from Christmas."

Even homosexual activists are part of the war, it seems. Why else, ask the conservatives, would Hallmark have been forced to remove the word "gay" from one of its Christmas ornaments?

Battle map drawn

Over at the Fox News website, readers are provided with an interactive War on Christmas map, which pinpoints the attacks by haters of Christianity across America.

Some of the key battles this season:

The Kiwanis Club in Cheboygan, Mich., forced to move its nativity scene off municipal property.
Merchants in Buffalo, N.Y., told by the city to pay for the electricity required to power Christmas lights.
A Salvation Army volunteer at a Pittsburgh mall told her big brass Christmas bell is making too much noise.
Michelle Obama and Sesame Street's Abby Cadabby read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" during the National Christmas Tree Lighting in Washington on Dec. 6. (REUTERS)

Bill O'Reilly, Fox's self-proclaimed bloviator, was so outraged at the officials of Bar Harbor, Me., that he dispatched a correspondent to confront them over their vote to remove a "coniferous war memorial … decked with coloured lights" from the village.

He and his fellow travellers have been ranting for years about the slow disappearance of the Jesus story from Christmas music, and about department stores replacing "Merry Christmas" with "Happy Holidays." (The first use of which, as far as I can tell, was in 1942 by the notorious Christmas-hater Bing Crosby.)

'tis the season for……… All out war LOL.
I have been seeing this go on for the past couple years. The war on Christmas or so they claim. To me it's a big joke that some people take it serious. As far as a nativity scene on government property that simple separation of church and state. I never see anything for Kwanzaa on government property.

I was over at my mom’s house the other day and I caught part of O'Reilly spiel about the war on Christmas it's like they really live in their own little bubble. Maybe it's just me but I don't see it there is plenty of decorations up around my town seems like business as usual for Christmas cheer.

This whole war on Christmas thing seems like a gimmick that they are pushing and I'm not sure for what reason but it's like they're vested in and they want it to be real if it is real I think it’s only in the media. Just a bunch of nit picking in my opinion. Oh well the video below seems fitting for the subject I hope you enjoy.

The Mr Deity Vids are always full of sarcasm.

Obviously the people in that photo didn't see Megyn Kelly's bit on Fox News.

It's the usual conservative strategy to pump up the base by telling them that their values are under attack. This type of propaganda bolsters an increasingly popular and frankly delusional sentiment that white Christians are victims of persecution and discrimination.

I listen to Beck, and do not agree with everything, but I love these unintelligent and drive-by views. With all of the PC BS, the anti christian crowd chimes in with no real knowledge of what he really says and just re parroted crap spewing from one sided non informed opinions. As the american melting pot thickens, there are those that are offended by the long standing basis of christmas and what it means to christians and non christians. This is basic american culture and some see the removal of certain aspects as a thinning of this culture. ONLY in this country will you see culture attacks of this magnitude due to the non respect of our age old ways. As this melting pot grows, we are forced by offended minorities to remove what we grew up with generation after generation and now it seems as this is the point where we are to bend over and change the majority, they must silence the voice of culture that our ancestors gave us. Go to ANY country with a spine like Iran and tell them that something of their culture offends you, good luck. At the current rate of the evaporating american culture, not just any holiday, anything to do with it will be just a memory, and then it will be interesting which culture will attempt the upper hand, some day some will see the chipping away, but there may be nothing left. At first they removed the symbols, then they removed the books....then they....Oh, yea, I am not a christian.....just an american whom has no problem with a nativity scene, nor a statue of Mohammed, but I will not be spineless and force the removal, grow some walnuts...

To clear the air, and be exact, what does Beck say that bothers you? and I listen to his show, therefore i know what he really says....any drive by thoughts? Your post set the stage, now lets see the superior views. christmas lights? Con Edison, talk to the Mayor, I think you need a real target.... Oh, and do not even try the almost clever edited liberal hacked youtube videos, seen them, sent them to a research analyst friend who laughed his ass off and sent the whole clip back with the whole truth attached, was not even a good edit, lame people do lame things and get lame results....

Becks words don't bother me in the slightest I think he is bat "snip" crazy so I don't take anything he says seriously. If anything I believe him when he said he is just an entertainer and shouldn’t be believed that may be the only statement from him I can take at face value. However it does bother me to some degree that there seems to be a portion of society that follow and believe him. I just think it’s sad there are so many that can’t see through the bull.

Oh well it takes all types and if there wasn’t one borne every minute people like Beck would have to find another line of work.

Sorry you have mistaken me for someone who watches MSM. I got rid of cable over a year ago. I may catch somthing when I visit my mom or on talk radio but as rule I don't let any side spoon feed me their views.

So I stick to what I said. I couldn't care less what any of them say it is just sad that so many other do.

Sorry, I miss read you to a degree, I listen to Beck and others, but like C2C as it rattles my theories. I am not 100% attached to anything but as my old friends whom do professional hi tech research keep me posted on several people and Beck is one of them. You would be amazed at some of the stuff this man has said that has come true, some has been dead on. We as Americans have been lead down a path of self destruction by the people we put in office, there are those whom call them on it, and we know who they are, when you love your country and culture, understand what it took to get to where we 'were', see the constant twisting and outright LIES, you can get serious and emotional, and expose the truth for what it truly is. This guy is not the answer to everything, but 98% of the attacks are outright BS! If supporting the constitution, American culture, and real freedom, being fisically responsible, and having real family and human values makes me bat crazy, then I would like my straight jacket in red, white and blue please.....

Well I am not sure what you claim to be having real family and human values but as far as the gov going to the dogs I never needed the likes of Beck to tell me how. I am sure some of the things he said have come true but its the other 70 to 80% of the claims and insinuations that make me stay far away from him. Any good snake oil salesman or peice of pseudo science is going to have some truth mixed in for credibility in fact here is a good video that can double for the purpose of this conversation.

Man, if that is all you got, my time is better spent on something else, I hear and see numbers and attacks but nothing of ANY real substance, All of the people who attack these conservatives just repuke the same garbage they hear from the morons whom get their whole database from agenda driven morons, What the hell are these people going to tell their grandchildren? I was part of a movement, I got all of my opinions from Robert, turns out he got them from Ted, who got them from Chuck who got them from.........

WOW I had no idea you felt so strongly about the supposed war on Christmas. Oh yeah that's right the thread is about that and not about Becks history. I guess we both forgot.

Actually I didn't maybe you did or you are trying to change the subject. If so you are wasting my time. I am not about to make this about crazy Beck. He said what he said. You say there is context but so far you kept it to yourself.
