So the police state has decided to amp things up a notch.
Surveillance of the public has been given steroids with the introduction of intellistreets.
I had known this technology was coming for almost a decade now.
Most of the poeple i had told about it either doubted it would ever happen of flippantly remarked that it sounded like a good idea.
Here's an quote from privacy advocate Daphne Lee in the article:

“This technology, you know is taking us to a place where, you know, you’ll essentially be monitored from the moment you leave your home till the moment you get home,”

Would something like that make you feel safe or would it make you paranoid at the possiblities which exist for the rampant abuse of such technologies?
You know who else has 24/7 surveillance and monitoring?
The prison system.
So the American police state is starting to fall into line with it's UK counterpart.
Everyone guilty until proven more guilty.
We are seeing them pop up in places with 1-person consent listening laws but the possibility that this new technology will be abused and become the focal point of numerous civil rights violations is too glaring to ignore.

I love how the reporter comments towards the end that they function on wi-fi, which he states is highly unlikely to be hijacked.
Wi-fi...unlikely to be hijacked!?
ALL wireless technology can be hacked and in MOST cases with unbelievable ease whether cars, tv's, computers, phones, smart appliances and medical implants...OH, BUT THE SIGNS ARE SECURE.
It would not suprise me to discover that "Illuminating Concepts" is in fact a venture capital firm subsidiary of Darpa or some similar alphabet organization.
We are entering a VERY dark place here people.

Nothing new about these. I know contractors who have been installing them for years, all over, for the Feds.

Intellistreets was only a matter of time. It's not a hidden surveillance camera. And like any new tech only time will tell whether it will live up to all the good that it brings. IMHO, Intellistreets will be a welcomed addition to any modern city.

I was in Las Vegas recently, and of course flashing lights are everywhere so it's hard to be sure, but particularly in some fairly boring hallways where there wasn't much crazy lighting I noticed that I got odd flashes in my peripheral vision when I would walk past some lighting fixtures. It did not seem similar to any normal lighting effects, like a glare or even a camera flash- almost more like a bright after-image from the light after passing it (even while sober). I honestly don't know if it was my imagination or the unfamiliar environment or a tell-tale behavior of this technology.

While the idea of a completely saturating surveillance system is ugly, I have to point out that video on everyone does mean video on everyone. Assuming that government systems continue to be penetrated and spring leaks, these cameras will eventually give up their secrets about the criminals in Washington DC. We'll have video for the next presidential sex scandal.

They have tried out similar things in London-wifi harvesting litter bins(now banned),CCTV cameras with operators who will bark reprimands at people if they break laws.

Not very nice at all,and a complete waste of money and resources IMO.
But hey,its just a tiny part of the entropy of civilization as we know it.

Ah well,robot cops on the streets soon,and micro drones in the air administering psychotopic pharmacuticals to the slobbering masses.

You gotta love technology.

Wow!! So what happens in Vegas... now...does what? Goes viral? Gets shared?

Wonder what this will do to tourism? The new surveillance vacation? The insides of casinos are already pretty wired. So just an added dimension? A new way to experience Vegas?

With wireless there's always the unknown (unwanted?) sharing possible between cameras and software so I guess I'll be able to pick this stuff up too in a drive-by or from a bus bench. Can't wait.
