So just on my way home from work today and I noticed a crazy green glow coming from the sky in the southerly direction i thought i was seeing things. Mind you this was about 8:30pm Melbourne time. Must have been some hectic solar activity to produce an Aurora this far north of the south pole. I tried to get home fast enough to get a picture from my roof but by the time i got home it was over. must have lasted half an hour from when I noted it. cant tell for sure how long it was going on for.

Never seen a Aurora in Melbourne before. Anybody else notice this tonight?

Double dammit...

...and I thought it was raining anyway.

Edit - are you sure it was aurora?
The ips report doesnt give particularly exciting numbers for K or A indexes, nor did they send me an alert "aurora warning" email.
Nor does the auroral oval even remotely approach Australia.

All up, it looks like a rather lame, quiet, NON auroral evening.

Edit2 - somebody put up a picture on instagram.
But this person appears to be the totally sole lone individual in the whole twitterverse to have seen it.

Anyone seeing the #aurora australis right down near south east Melbourne?

Erm fellow tweeters - any ideas on what the green glow in the sky is over Cranbourne tonight?! pic.twitter.com/AUKUyZlWu8

Yep @evilsnoofy has it - the light from the racecourse reflecting *green* up onto the clouds (yes I did have to go and investigate)

John McClumpha ‏@JohnMcClumpha 4h
@PhatRS @michaelmessig - nope not Aurora Australis unfortunately - a much less exciting reality - but looks awesome
