Censorship and Puritanism

I posted a topic earlier about the upheaval at the networks and apologies based on Monday Night Football's response to the airing of their promo. The thread was moved to "television" on Below Top Secret. I don't dabble in below top secret. I wanted to engage in a conversation about puritanism and what happened to being red blood American's. There's "political correctness" and then there's rediculously cautious and hypocritical behavior on the part of network executives. I really did mean for the discussiont occur here...in the land of "deny ignorance". Does anyone else think the Christian Right has the networks by the cohones?

If it's the one about the naked woman in the ad with the guy, could you kindly explain why we women are NOT supposed to find an ad featuring a naked woman and a fully clothed man offensive? If it's okay.. then it would have been okay if SHE was fully clothed and he was naked, right?

Now, imagine sitting down with your six year old daughter and five year old son. Do you really want that ad in front of them? Would you want a naked-man-ad airing while they watched tv?

Frankly, I think it takes cojones to stand up to the women-are-expected-to-be-cooperative-sextoys mentality (and should be displayed naked for the pleasure of men at all times.) The United States is not "Of the Men, By the Men, For the Men..." Last time I checked, Lincoln said it was "Of the people, by the people, for the people."

Women and children are people, too.

A ma'am!

I think the christian right and by extension, Bush & Co., are highly invested in keeping gender roles rigid. That keeps men and women at odds with each other and gets in the way of teaming up for the greater good. It also keeps two viable populations of consumers at the ready. Boys like one set of toys, girls another. If you look at gender typing in advertising and pop culture, you can really see that push. Backyard play tents - pink with flowers and a tea set for the girls; camo with camping gear for the boys - and so on. These kids grow up with that rigid mindset fully formed and continue shopping based on those gender lines.

Bludgeoning men with the idea that the ideal woman is pliant, sexually ready, and still provides household servant duties while working full time and raising kids, means that men have extremely unrealistic views on partnership and responsibility-sharing.

Bludgeoning women that they need to please a man, no matter how abusive, alcoholic, or just plain jerky sets them up to play dumb, get surgery, run themselves ragged, give up rights, and deny their own equality.

All of us would benefit as a culture from a partnership model of male/female relations. That all humans have strengths & weaknesses, like sex, need meaningful work, and so on. Male and female are not opposites, they are two genders on a continuum of genders within a single species.

That being said, the raging feminist side of me must add that if men were neutered at birth, a lot of lives would be saved. At very least, men should recognize that unchecked testosterone hurts a lot of women. www.news.harvard.edu...

I only saw part of the add on my local news and as far as I'm concerned it was no big deal. Some people don't like it and I understand they may not like their kids to see it. We have everything on cable & sat thus I don't have a big problem with limits on OTA networks. Since OTA networks are not scrambled & can be seen by anyone I think it's okay to have limits there.

I haven't seen any porn channels go away on my satellite due to Bush & company. I think you guys are whinning about nothing.
