I had never heard of this before, and didn't find it on ATS with the search. Apparently there was a unique, small wolf specie in Japan which was declared extinct in 1905. There have been many sightings since, however, and at least one man captured some photos, but experts says it could be a feral dog.

The Japanese wolf, described as having a sharp face and a curled tail tip, is an extinct species on the Japanese Red List of the Environment Ministry. It was hunted mercilessly by humans, fell victim to infectious diseases and saw its habitat wiped out by development.

We humans have such a love and hate relationship with wolves. I wonder if this will ever change?
