I met my husband 12 years ago and he was very into "heavy Metal" and that genre, where as I ave always been a Pop, Top 40, Country and Oldies gal
myself. I thought metal was harsh and would always ask him, "Seriously, what do they have to be soo angry about?" It was a joke for awhile (and I
still don't understand a lot of it lol), but then it got to the point that the only thing I could do to get through him playing it at home or in the
car was to listen to the lyrics.
The band that changed my opinion (slightly) was System Of A Down. The lyrics of this band's songs are extremely intense, revolution inciting actually
if you listen closely enough. I was reminded of several of their songs over the past few weeks with all the going's on within and without our
borders. One of my favorite songs is B.Y.O.B. (off their 2005 album Mezmerize, part of a two-part album release that year) which is about the lies our
leaders tell us in order to gain our support for going to war... Syria brought these lyrics to my frontal lobe.
WHY DO THEY ALWAYS SEND THE POOR!
Barbarisms by Barbera's
With pointed heels.
Victorious, victories kneel.
For brand new spankin' deals.
Marching forward hypocritic
And hypnotic computers.
You depend on our protection,
Yet you feed us lies from the table cloth.
La la la la la la la la la,
Everybody's going to the party have a real good time.
Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine.
Kneeling roses disappearing,
Into Moses' dry mouth,
Breaking into Fort Knox,
Stealing our intentions,
Hangars sitting dripped in oil,
Crying FREEDOM!
Handed to obsoletion,
Still you feed us lies from the table cloth.
La la la la la la la la la,
Everybody's going to the party have a real good time.
Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine.
Everybody's going to the party have a real good time.
Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine.
Blast off, it's party time,
And we don't live in a fascist nation,
Blast off, it's party time,
And where the f*** are you?
Where the f*** are you?
Where the f*** are you?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor? [X4]
There's a little more to it, but mostly repeated lyrics and the repeated chorus. Here's a link to the video for anyone interested.
B.Y.O.B.
Then I thought of the song "Chop Suey" (off of their 2001 album Toxicity) when discussing the Self Immolation of 64 year old John Constantino this
past Friday in D.C.
Wake up (wake up)
Grab a brush and put a little make-up
Hide the scars to fade away the shake-up
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?
Here you go create another fable
You wanted to
Grab a brush and put a little makeup
You wanted to
Hide the scars to fade away the shake-up
You wanted to
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?
You wanted to
I don't think you trust
In my self-righteous suicide
I cry when angels deserve to die, die
Wake up (wake up)
Grab a brush and put a little make-up
Hide the scars to fade away the shake-up
Hide the scars to fade away the
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?
Here you go create another fable
You wanted to
Grab a brush and put a little make-up
You wanted to
Hide the scars to fade away the shake-up
You wanted to
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?
You wanted to
I don't think you trust
In my self-righteous suicide
I cry when angels deserve to die
In my self-righteous suicide
I cry when angels deserve to die
Father, father, father, father
Father, into your hands I commend my spirit
Father, into your hands
Why have you forsaken me?
In your eyes forsaken me
In your thoughts forsaken me
In your heart forsaken me, oh
Trust in my self-righteous suicide
I cry when angels deserve to die
In my self-righteous suicide
I cry when angels deserve to die
These are the complete lyrics. It is about being abused and being made to believe by your abuser that it is your fault, your choice. What brought
these lyric's to mind mostly was the verse:
Trust in my self-righteous suicide
I cry when angels deserve to die
In my self-righteous suicide
I cry when angels deserve to die!

Chop Suey
And just for fun, since these are the lyrics for the deeply spiritual (yes, spiritual lol) song "Aeriels" (Also off of the album Toxicity). This
song is a "how-to" of sorts, basically if you free your mind and look to the sky's, enlightenment is surely there for you.
Life is a waterfall
we're one in the river
and one again after the fall
swimming through the void
we hear the word
we lose ourselves
but we find it all....
cause we are the ones that want to play
always want to go
but you never want to stay
and we are the ones that want to choose
always want to play
but you never want to lose
aerials, in the sky
when you lose small mind
you free your life
life is a waterfall
we drink from the river
then we turn around and put up our walls
swimming through the void
we hear the word
we lose ourselves
but we find it all...
cause we are the ones that want to play
always want to go
but you never want to stay
and we are the ones that want to choose
always want to play
but you never want to lose
aerials, in the sky
when you lose small mind
you free your life
aerials, so up high
when you free your eyes eternal prize
aerials, in the sky
when you lose small mind
you free your life
aerials, so up high
when you free your eyes eternal prize
