Uh Oh.... Another one, but apparently, only a close one this time.

Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan have attacked the US consulate in the western city of Herat.

The Taliban told the BBC a suicide bomber had detonated explosives outside the building before dawn on Friday.

Other fighters then opened fire on the consulate. Several Afghan police are reported to have been killed and injured in the gun battle.

That's not to make light of an attack, but simply to be thankful it didn't go like Libya.

The BBC's David Loyn in Kabul says the attack - carried out in the shadow of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the US - is a demonstration of the ability of insurgents still to disrupt Afghanistan 12 years on.

I'd have to agree and come back to wondering...what was accomplished there? We killed one man but didn't even get all the men we started after. Omar comes to mind. I'm mindful of the fact good men are still over there and the fighting has not stopped, but I can't help thinking it should have. Years ago.

We should have known from the Russian experience, we'd never be allowed to withdraw with any peace though. They had the Russians asking nicely to please cross the last bridges with their final ground columns without being rocketed. We still ought to spike and blow everything American which cannot fly out, in place, and bug out. Screw it and cut losses all around.
