Petition to penny pinching Australian government elect for 'Fibre To The Home' Internet

If you're an Australian citizen or plan to reside in the country in the future, I entreat you to sign (and disseminate) this petition in order to try dissuade the newly elected, technologically inept, conservative government of the country to go ahead with their plans to dump the current NBN (National Broadband Network) project for the markëdly inferior FTTN ([optical] Fibre To The Node) set-up.



• FTTH (Fibre To The Home) can yield up to 100Mb/s, realistically only limited only by relay switching
• FTTN only 12Mb/s (touted to deliver up to 25Mb/s by those promoting it, which is little more than the nominal speeds the current networks tout to offer (20Mb), anyway)
• The cost of the alternate (slower) plan is cheaper in the short term, but ends up costing the same in the long run; as the ageing copper wires running to homes must be replaced eventually
• If consumers want fibre to their homes, they'll have to foot the costs (AU$2000 - 3000), leaving renters and the like out in the cold
• Slower Internet in Australia clearly only benefits Rupert Murdoch - the guy that used his media clout to essentially win the country's recent election - and his feebly penetrating pay TV service

Do not let Australia lag behind the world in the most important means of communication and learning since the invention of transcription itself.

Once upon a time I would have agreed with you. But Turnbull's boat has sailed. The Libs are crazy but they aren't stupid - they took every advantage of Labors infighting and aren't about to repeat that mistake.

When their idiotic policies start to really run down the country, Rupert will arrange for a double dissolution and they'll run it down even further. Then they'll lose the next election (assuming Labor has reorganized from top to bottom by then) and Hockey will take over for the Libs.

I really hope we have a Referendum on this.
Otherwise we need to start a protest and not let them put these nodes in until we get this referendum then we will see what Democracy means. All though people voted liberal, they didn't really agree to their policies merely they have been lied to about the initial cost on fttn.

So if you don't wanna see ugly looking nodes popping up every where with tagged graffiti eventually on them in suburbia, I suggest you at least sign this petition, protect your property values.

Sorry dude NBN is a total waste of money for a kid's toy that the country cannot afford. I have wireless internet and it works ok for most things. There are so many rorts going on with the building of NBN that there should be royal commission into it. It should be stopped right now! The technology will probably be out of date in a couple of years anyway.

I signed it. NBN is NOT a waste of money and is only a total waste of money if they use FTTN and not FTTH.

It's basically simple.
Majority of Australians have access to FTTN speed currently.

There isn't any point doing a NBN for FTTN speed.

There is a point for doing a NBN for FTTH speed.

The speed differences are astounding...

FTTN - 24Mb/s (ADSL 2 speed) ($2000 - $3000 to connect your home - Copper wire speed - i'm currently getting 560KB/s 3km from the node - Enables 720p Youtube watching)
FTTH: 100Mb/s upgrading to 1000Mb/s (Fibre Optics - Used to be on Telstra cable 30Mb/s and download at 2.5 MB/s - enables 1080p Youtube watching)

With connection prices like that for FTTN I can really see if being a great success with the Australian people....

I am happy to tell business people ( I am one) and doctors ( I know several) that NBN is a total waste of money, no matter how you spin it. I believe NZ got their NBN for about 600 million, not 50 billion. I could be wrong here, and NZ is a much smaller country but 50 billion is totally excessive.

Agreed the wireless is not so cheap but you will still have to pay an arm and a leg for NBN. I don't know why people think it's for free. As for the rorts.... well , an old mate of mine does a lot of work with his earthmoving company for the NBN rollout and his drivers have told me that all they can do is shake their heads and laugh at the stuff that is going on with it and how much it is costing the taxpayer. Also, I know for a fact that some of this asbestos they have dug up in the testra pits is being illegally dumped- seen it with my own eyes. Don't want to incriminate anyone so I will say no more.
You sound like a person who is in awe of all the gadgetry and has to have the latest thing (you don't want to"lag behind'). But as I said how soon will this technology be out of date anyway? Who cares about the bragging rights of fast internet? As you will soon find out, the outgoing Labor government has left us so far in the red that we won't be able afford a postage stamp let alone internet.
