Report: CIA believes Israel acquired chemical weapons decades ago

Israel is believed to have secretly developed a range of chemical weapons in the 1960s and 70s as further defense against an attack by the surrounding enemy states, according to a report in Foreign Policy, which quotes a "secret 1983 CIA intelligence estimate." The CIA document, Foreign Policy says, states that US satellites in 1982 found "a probable CW [chemical weapon] nerve agent production facility and a storage facility... at the Dimona Sensitive Storage Area in the Negev Desert." Furthermore, the document is claimed to have said, "Other CW production is believed to exist within a well-developed Israeli chemical industry." The CIA document purportedly goes on to say that, "While we cannot confirm whether the Israelis possess lethal chemical agents, several indicators lead us to believe that they have available to them at least persistent and nonpersistent nerve agents, a mustard agent, and several riot-control agents... with suitable delivery systems."

When is Obama going to set a red line date for Israel to give up it's CW's or face a military strike. While we are at it we may as well remove the government as well. It's time Israel to undergo UN inspections the same way they cry that other nations should be inspected. And if they do not submit The world should place sanctions on them just like Iran.

I realize that you think Israel is the big monster on the planet and all ... but this says Israel MAY have them ... and they've never used them ... and they've never threatened to use them. So why get all worked up and do the 'red line' thing when there seems to be no threat going on???

It's interesting that a classified report from CIA dated 1983 should be released to the public. How relevant should it be in 2013. There are no indications that Israel has used CW on its population or anybody else's populace. Additionally, we're allies with Israel. What do you expect the U.S. gov't to do?

When has Iran threatened to nuke Israel? Yet Israel is constantly crying inspect them or invade them. It is time Israel was held to the same standards as everyone else.

You can sit back and turn a blind eye to what Israel does in this world but everyone isn't like you. Some of the people thinks every nation should be treated equally. Not all nations must follow these laws except one who must be above all others.

Yes there is evidence that Israel used CW's on Palestinians. When they used an air-burst to spread WP in Gaza that was a CW attack. But there were no crying about the 400 kids that were burned to death on the news were there.

Why would Israel care about Chemical weapons? On the ladder of development, that's like turning in your machine gun for a lever action? They have already mastered the skill level above slime, and chemical weapons create as many or more headaches to make and store (as the US has learned the hard way) as it's ever useful to have for anything.

I can see Israel having chems first....as in, 60's or early 70's....but once they became fully committed to the nuclear solution for ultimate insurance or victory? Why downgrade? It doesn't pass the logic test.

@ Oh... (sees above post) This thread is about going back to the tired old B.S. about White Phosphorous being equal to recognized chemical weapons. Never mind... I'll step back and watch.


Just an FYI... WP in Israel is a moot point. They have, as a matter of fact, given up stocking OR using it.

Indeed .. Israel should be required to sign up to both the Chemical Warfare treaty as well as the Nuclear NPT.

But when the shoe is on the other foot the US has always vetoed any moves by the UN or the Security Council to require Israel to open it's WMD research facilities at Dimona.

This lack of integrity and consistency is the cause of proliferation.

The World has a chance right now ... to not only rid Syria of CW ... but also to get Israel signed up to the International Treaties under guarantee of her Protection from hostilities.

Because there are treaties if war, and its damn odd one of our closets supposed Allie does not sign them or honor them,

Chemical weapons ban and nuclear proliferation, I'm not anti-israel I just want them held to the same standards as the rest of the world.

Why are people all upset about north Korea for having nukes, when Israel has a "samson" option where if Israel falls they launch all the nukes they have at the rest of the world?!

Hell the reason the CIA knows about there chemicals is probably because they have the receipt of sale for them... The entire middle east is a mess because of western interest and intervention, Israel included.

If the CIA believes this, it's probably because they are the ones who sold them to Israel just like they did with the rebels in Syria.
