I can go into any store in America and see it. "Buy Coke!" the sign tries to induce me to purchase caffeinated sugar water. I don't. I've made a personal choice to stop drinking it. And not just Coke, but Pepsi, and other corporate companies. But I made this about Coke because of how much of an American Icon it is. It is one of the last sacred cows in establishment. Some people don't even see it as part of the establishment, but it is.

I am unable to stop seeing the saturation of this beverage. It's every where. Global. And virulently anti union.
Anyone ever hear of Isidro Gil? Or Adolfo Jesus Munera? They were murdered by Coca Cola goons.

"But who's to say that it's the corporate HQ's fault?", some of you might ask. A valid question. But I think a person ought to be responsible for their kids, and since corporations are legally people, what is a franchisee but a child of said company?

Out in India, farmers can't water their crops. Villagers can't get enough clean water to stay hydrated. Why??
Because of the huge bottling plants. Why does the west think this sort of behavior is acceptable?

Nestle endorses child labor, and Pepsi does evil too, I'm sure. Any corporation is about as honest and noble as some amalgam of lawyer, politician, and snake oil sales man.

It just makes me angry, to see the world carved up and polluted, people dying, empires rising and falling, all for what, sugar water? Just seems like there's something wrong there.

We toppled over countries when they denied us the right to their tropical paradises. Created Banana "Republics", U.S. run puppet states. What ever trade good they had, and we wanted, we took. We killed Salvador Allende for having the will to stand up for his people. We murdered the elected Iranian President because he was too much of a socialist. This country was founded on things like liberty, equality, and morality. Yet somewhere we lost our way.

We've had the country snatched out from under us by lecherous bankers and twisted CEOs who've bought the congress, and written their own laws, favorable only to them.

We have them constantly bombarding us with advertisement that does nothing but lie to people. Yet, they're still as "American as Apple Pie". So is napalm, and a state of total war and paranoia.

But back in the initial days of this country, we had men with conviction. Men who stood up and fought against an oppressive force. Do you think Washington and Jefferson, Franklin, and the other founding fathers were sitting around, thinking about how much money they were gonna get in graft once they were free from Britain?

I don't. They were sick of corrupt political power, and tried to tailor the Constitution to prevent such abuses of power. Jefferson once said something akin to that every generation needs it's own revolution.

I dunno. If it does ever come, the revolution, I hope it's bloodless. Violence never helps a cause.

Corporations have so much blood upon their hands though, it'll never wash out.

I don't know if the U.S. will be around in forty years. But I'd bet a good bit that Coca Cola will, and all those other massive conglomerates. Disturbing trends in the progression of the globe.

Does anyone have any examples of corporate malice like the previously mentioned examples? I am always looking to learn something new. I hoped to start a good debate about corporate abuse of power.

I just finished reading a book called Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us
Coke and Pepsi are discussed....and by the book title...you can see they are not benevolent companies.

Not exactly the stuff in your OP, but these companies add stuff to their products...knowing full well that people will become hooked, that these products can be unhealthy.
They take about bliss points.
The amount of sugar, salt or fat they can add to products to make them irresistible.

In spite of the health warnings, the epidemic of obesity....and it's all about their bottom line.
It's all about Wall Street telling them to sell....sell....sell.
And it has become global....as more and more countries are introduced to the Real Thing.....to Oreos...

It used to be that these things we're supposed to go easy on, weren't all too easy to come by.

Ever make home made butter? Takes quite a while. Way better, too.

But people got lazy, and society encouraged such laziness. Mass farming leading to mass consumption leading to critical mass.

Anyone ever hear of Malthusian collapse? There's seven billion so far. Seven billion people, and most of us like to eat every day.

But what they feed us is garbage. One day, we'll be eating nothing better than pet food for people. Some of us already do. My food budget ain't too great.

You could see change in your body(for the better) as soon as you cut out 80% of your unneeded sugar consumption.

You will lose weight too.. because if there is less sugar, your body would tap into fat for energy.

The large beverage companies are evil. I went years without drinking a single soda, these days I'm back on the train I suppose but it's still a rarity. I'll buy maybe 2 6 packs of soda from Trader Joe's a year, and buy an occasional Jones or similar small company soda about once a month.

I do confess to being one of the idiots that buys bottled water, but it's store brand flavored water (which some research tells me is ultimately manufactured by Absopure) and honestly just tastes really good. I get around 3 liters of that per week.

Other than that you can do a lot with tap water. I drink a lot of tea.

I also do my best to not buy any nestle brands. Ultimately, some of these companies are so massive that you end up having to buy from one or the other. Atleast I can pick the worst few and not buy their stuff. Sadly, most consumers don't really care about who owns what and will just buy products they like. Consumer apathy is a very real, and very dangerous thing.

Edit: Actually, this thread got me to look over Coke's brands. Sadly, the only option for orange juice at the grocery stores around here is owned by them. I wasn't aware of that. It looks like I'll be giving up my occasional bottle of juice now.

Didn't you already have a thread on this? What happened to it?

I cut way back on sugar a while back, it is bad for my TLE. The problem I am realizing is constipation. If I eat cake I stay regular. Since the basis for a lot of laxitives is sugar, I suppose that sugar is needed for a little more than brain function. Brains run on ketones fine, only a little sugar is needed for certain sections.

Now Coke is made from coca leaves which contain a small amount of co-caine. It uses sugar, carbon dioxide, and caffeine to adjuvate the drug. It isn't dangerous but is somewhat psychoactive. It is like using adjuvants to boost small active elements of vaccines.

Having a small amount of coke will not harm anyone, but using it regularly can cause changes to the brain just as co caine use does. I read about these changes in the structure of the brain on Science Daily within the last couple of weeks. They mentioned needing further investigating of the changes that occur to see the consequences, I suppose the cola companies will kill this research if people realize how their product works. We actually use a lot of psychoactive chemistry in the western diet, some good and some bad. Most of it is harmless if moderation is observed.
Yeah right, as if moderation has been even considered in this country recently, half the people are living on a buzz from choosing foods that make them feel the way they want to feel.

Supplements are also guilty. Food additives have either doping or attractant chemistry. If you goof up then doctors will help you to get the correct buzz.
Oh sorry, those are called antidepressants. Now that is off topic for a coke thread
