In recognition of the decline in violence in the most battled region between India and Pakistan, Kashmir, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has
ordered an unknown number reduction in troops.

India has deployed one million troops since 1989, when more than a dozen Islamic militant groups began fighting for independence in the Indian-held
section of Kashmir. Some of the groups want a merger with neighbouring Pakistan.

Prime Minister Singh has also indicated that there will be also be an increase in number if the violence increases.
Both countries have been in dispute since 1947, the year both countries gained independence from Great Britain.
