Cruz released his birth certificate amid concerns that being born in Canada could derail a possible presidential run by the tea party firebrand.

In a statement issued Monday night, Cruz said "the facts of my birth are straightforward: I was born in 1970 in Calgary, Canada. Because my mother was a U.S. citizen, born in Delaware, I was a U.S. citizen by birth. When I was a kid, my Mom told me that I could choose to claim Canadian citizenship if I wanted. I got my U.S. passport in high school.

"Because I was a U.S. citizen at birth, because I left Calgary when I was 4 and have lived my entire life since then in the U.S., and because I have never taken affirmative steps to claim Canadian citizenship, I assumed that was the end of the matter," he added. "Now The Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship. Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but I'm an American by birth and as a U.S. Senator, I believe I should be only an American."

How can he possibly run for president if he waas literally born in Canada. Or does that not matter, as long as mother was American?

To be honest, who cares. The man obviously has integrity issues, as renouncing his citizenship is purely for his own political gain.

I don't think he will be welcomed back to Alberta with open arms in the future. God forbid he actually becomes president, which I highly doubt.

This is similar to Obama in the US and Michael Ignatieff in Canada.

He's getting scrutiny now after some recent articles on this issue. Personally not sure if he is a natural born citizen just because his mother was. His father was Cuban and he was born out of the US. If he was born in the US or both his parents were US citizens then end of story he is a natural born citizen.

Did a thread on this a while back with little traction but it is an important issue.
Can Ted Cruz run for president?

Just because one is a US citizen, one is not necessarily a natural born US citizen! I wish people would stop listening to those who attempt to trample on the Constitution to fit their own agendas. The Constitution does not define natural born citizen, but it IS defined in Minor vs. Happersett, which has NEVER been overturned. It's also defined in Vattel's Law of Nations, of which our Founders were well aware. There is also this attorney's blogspot: www.puzo1.blogspot.com There are a few articles at News with Views by J.B. Williams which discuss the issue...

Cruz/Jindal/Rubio are NOT natural born citizens...one must be born on U.S. soil to parentS (plural) who are themselves citizens...the parents don't necessarily have to be natural born ones, just US citizens. Cruz was born in Canada to a Cuban immigrant father. Jindal and Rubio's parents were NOT citizens when they were born here.
Obama is still up in the air since it's not known for sure where he was born...and there's also allegations that someone else is his real father (what a mess that would be to sort out)...

I like Cruz. I hope he continues the good fight in the Senate! He IS eligible to serve there!

John McCain had to submit to a short but very REAL Senate investigation to establish HE could run for President because he wasn't born in the United States. Get this..he was born on U.S. Soil, in the Panama Canal Zone while the US had full control and security of it. His father was brass in the Navy, of course, and came to be an Admiral. His mother, also a citizen. Yet...still,, he underwent the inquiry. So quick and straight forward, the media barely registered it while screaming about people wanting the same from Obama in '08.

If Cruz can run, then Natural Born has lost 100% all meaning. Totally.

All Cruz needs to do is seal all his records, produce a social security number from Connecticut, and a long form birth certificate from Hawaii and he's good!

It should matter to the Tea Party and all those that were screaming about the theory that Obama was born in Africa. The fact that Obama's mom was a US citizen was never in doubt, but according to them if Obama was not born in the US, then he wasn't eligible.

In this case, we know 100% that Cruz wasn't born in the US and only one parent was a citizen. I wonder if Ted Cruz ever called to see Obama's birth certificate...because that would be embarrassing.

So where are all the angry Birthers? Where is Sheriff Joe? Where is all the outrage that this Canadian may run for President?

Do I have to point out the glaring difference between the two men and the reactions by right wingers?

So you're going to jump on the "Obama sealed his records" bandwagon?

How very original and smart of you.

Or at least reference the story about Obama using his Birth Certificate as a blunt wrapper.

Obviously, they only care about people who aren't republicans. Remember Romney had an issue like that too, or was it his dad that was born in Mexico or something?

Yes his dad was an immigrant. He was also on welfare, but no one cares about that story either.
