I have been listening to heavy metal since I was five years old, I prefer old Metallica, thier work before the black album, (upon which I shall spit for ten thousand eternities) and I cannot stand the profit driven groups like Trivium and the like.
For sure, there are enough of those wazzocks about, but I am not one of them. I was going to explain that Mastadon, Devin Townsend and his various projects, Ihshan from Emperor (who I will hopefully be seeing next year after thier reunion), Bloodbath, Vomitory, Hackneyed...
If you havent been hearing some epic music coming out of the metal scene over this last decade, then you simply havent been listening, and thats all there is to it!
I saw Dillinger Escape Plan open for the Deftones, and that was badass. They actually rocked some new math prog time signatures, polyrythms, and whatnot. Also, Dillinger's lead singer came out and sand Maynard's part on "Passenger" with the Deftones.
Nice!

Look, just because music doesnt make it onto the charts doesnt make it under the radar. If people missed it, thier radar was crap, and they dont deserve the enjoyment of it! I honestly dont care if there is never another high charting metal song in the history of music. Couldnt give a stuff. I mean does anyone REALLY watch the charts for good music? Have they ever? Maybe back in the day when the Beatles were considered phenomenal and Elvis was standing in for Jesus Christ as most popular human being ever born (even though Jerry Lee Lewis was a FAR more talented and passionate musician) the charts had some value, but they havent done for a very VERY long time, certainly not here in Britain.
Thrash bands should stay thrash.

All right then, perhaps I need to refine my point.
Metallica were a damned good thrash band. They became a sorry joke in my eyes because they sold out, slowed down and began playing some of the most middle of the road crap I have ever heard in my life. Perhaps thrash shouldnt stay thrash, but brutal should stay brutal. They became less brutal, and that is not cool in the slightest.
Meshuggah then got it totally right in terms of thier evolution as an act. Instead of selling out, and trying for the chick appeal of ballads and the like, they got on with the business of total obliteration of peoples eardrums, with unrelenting beats, improbable breaks and time signatures, and furious pace. They became MORE brutal.
I guess what I am saying is, that when a metal band starts at one level of brutal, they shouldnt take backsteps. Another example would be a band called Amoral. They used to play proper tech metal, nasty breakdowns, horrific riffs, the whole bit. Nowadays they are closer to a power metal band than anything else. Thats backwards.
Incidentally, Meshuggah played Bloodstock in the UK a couple of years back, and they were bloody AMAZING live. When you sit and watch thier videos, or listen to thier albums, if you have never seen them live it can all be a bit confusing. You sit there for half an hour trying to figure out where the tune is. The reason for that is that when you see them live, your ribcage becomes part of the instrumental, the bones in your skull add melody in sympathy with the resonance they create on stage. I totally get it now, and I love Meshuggah as a result. Still... didnt quite know what to make of it all before I heard it live!

First thought was this song, then upon reading the thread noticed that Leonard Nimoy had already been mentioned a couple of times, but not for this;
Going to give him the benefit of the doubt here and dismiss it as a 'novelty' song - a truly awful one at that.
Music is very much a subjective thing and I know some people like this song, but it makes me want to vomit.
The top ten countdown tells it all - popular music was absolutely awful at the time - nearly as bad as at present.
At the time a group of us used to go round a friends house most nights, drink cider, vodka etc and listen to each other's music. As I still am today back then I was really in to punk, ska and mod revival stuff and I won most of my friends over, but one friend really disliked all that and we had little common ground where music was concerned apart from a mutual liking for John Lennon, (my opinion on him has changed dramatically, hers hasn't).
One of her particular favourites really annoys me, I think it's appalling.
We still see each occasionally, somewhat ironically at quite a few concerts.
A few months ago I was invited to her daughters birthday party, we got talking and this song came up in the conversation. My friend asked the dj to play it and it filled the dance floor - I was quite disturbed.
