IDK the only thing OP has going for him with this story is, he sounds credible. But all we have
is a second hand story with some wholes in it. His uncle not only ran from a deer without firing a shot.
But he seems to have failed to ask that most obvious question as well.
i.e. why didn't you just shoot it ? deers don't eat deers so......

I would like to hear the reason he ran tho ? Otherwise.......

He ran because it didn't feel right. Intuition, or his gut, or something like it. He said that the deer's eyes looked dead. Like something that had been skinned and taxidermied. Now, taken with a grain of salt, my uncle likes a drink or two. But he's had his drink before without going off on some wild tale.

Now, I guess he could of gotten drunk, and seen some particularly sickly deer. That's probably closer to the truth than anything else. But it's just a distinctly disturbing event. I'd be less disturbed if it were some omnivorous creature eating another. That sort of thing happens every day. Maybe it's something in the water. Some sort of pesticide or something.

I'll just say this. If your uncle, a full grown man of experience in the woods,
used to being alone out there ? Actually saw something shocking enough,
to cause him just to turn tail and bolt ? I know his type well and they just
do not cry wolf. Period. Something was pretty far out of whack.
That's for sure. It had to be something crazy, to put that kind of fear in him.

This is pretty weird. Have you read " The hunt for the skinwalker " ?

Deer will occasionally eat meat. Though it is rare for them to do so. They have been spotted visiting and munching on birds, rabbits, roadkill and even on the leftovers of where another deer has been butchered.

Seeing is believing with meat-eating deer

Bambi Ate Thumper

Meat-Eating Deer Exclusive photos of a whitetail deer eating meat on trail cam.

He and Pete Squibb, a Michigan wildlife biologist, conducted a three-year study of the theory in 19 states.

Using 26 to 58 volunteers every year, the study produced countless trail camera photos of deer reacting to meat offerings. Volunteers placed cameras over deer gut piles and carcasses, dead rabbits and beavers, and on one occasion, even a leftover thanksgiving turkey.

Regardless of where or when the carrion was placed, the study revealed deer visited 63 percent of the sites. In some cases cameras showed deer just looking at the pile, but in some photos it caught them eating the meat.

So yeah, he probably saw what he thought he saw.

To add a bit just from experience.

Usually you track a deer that has been shot by following the blood trail and / or tracks. This can be anywhere from easy or hard to do depending. Often, if you loose the trail you can start doing a sweep (back and forth or around in circles) a little further out each time till you pick it up again.

Sounds like one of two things, either he gut shot the deer ( which could explain the guts he saw) or he stumbled across the remains of a deer field dressed by another hunter. Either way, when he got there he saw what he saw. Its rare, but it happens.
