Hi,

In britain there is an Island labeled "Anthrax Island" (Gruinard Island") where in 1942 tests were done with Anthrax. the island is unihabited to this day even though it was cleaned up and declared open by the British Government in the 80's 90's.

In the 50's 60's American and British Governments were testing Anthrax vaccines on people.
Britain especially in the begining of 1960 in Scotland where on the west Coast Spores were thought to be being carried down from "anthrax Island"

Elvis Presley Came to Britain only once ever.
It was March 3rd 1960 at Prestwick Airport in Scotland on the west coast.
He was finishing his Army national service.
He only stopped in Britain for 2 hours before taking off again.
There was the 1631 USAF Unit based at Prestwick.

Go to this web site for proof of his 2 hours in the UK but look at Photo number 6 from the top?? Are they scared? Who was talking to Elvis ?What did the Women hear??
www.rockmine.music.co.uk...

Why did he only stay for 2 hours when he could have stayed at the Airbase or in a Hotel and had a few Beers etc??

I thought i would post the link to the island you mention.

www.brainyencyclopedia.com...

You have a few dates wrong in your quote, but ya not that far out.
People tend to click the links and follow up threads for themselves, then leave comments for the originator to answer/debate.

I was wondering what Elvis had to do with the island? Or was you trying to cover both topics in one thread?

Sorry Yes now edited.

It was roumered that the vaccine tests could have been done in that area Prestwick especially regarding the Airbase and the people in and around Ayr in 1960?

Could it have been whispered to him or his fellow travellers? being from the Army he could have heard about the Tests?

The tests were carried out in 1942. Elvis was in Prestwick 3rd March 1960.

Yes the Island was infected for a great number of years until scientists tried to flush the island in 1986.
Spores left by the experiment kept the island in quarantine for 48 years (BBC)

Vaccine tests were conduted later in the late 50's early 60's. Around Elvis's flying visit

Another thing remember what was built in the 50's for the "Cold War" not far from the famous Golf course "St Andrews" Nr Anstruther?

Now its a tourist attraction- Tests?? What sort?/

Also remember Machrihanish not far from Prestwick.

I know its bits and pieces but what if any was the conection rumoured between the Vaccine test and Elvis leaving in a Hurry?

If Elvis had been infected or fallen ill after his stay could this have become a huge story that the UK didn't want to get World media attention?
Not many people in the world believe Elvis ever came to Britain such was the Clean up Operation

America at the same time was using "Human" Guinea pigs to test the Vaccine on.

Prestwick is over 200 miles from Gruinard Island. The chances of Elvis contracting any ailments other than a cold in the 2 hours he was at Prestwick seem remote to me.

What clean up operation are you refering to? can supply a link to back up your theory?

The USA is a lot further away than Porton Down.

All I can say is :

1959, 1960
Elvis visits for fuel stop?
small number of fans?
Hippies or protestors
Anthrax Island (Supply of A)
MoD
Tests??
In 1959, the British government was asked if Prestwick, an existing US Air Force base south of Glasgow, could be expanded to take the new radar. But there was a problem: the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament was gaining momentum, and the radar's presence near a large left-wing city would draw protesters. Moreover, they would have a point; as the American magazine Aviation Week admitted, the radar "would make the area a prime target". The British said no to Prestwick. In 1960, the Americans tried again.

Adminstered....to populous

Maassab began work on an influenza vaccine in the 1950s as a public health graduate student under the direction of Dr. Thomas Francis Jr.the researcher credited with first isolating flu virus and with developing the first killed virus flu vaccine, and perhaps best known as the scientist who announced to the world that the Jonas Salk polio vaccine was safe and effective. Francis supervised the U.S. Army's flu vaccine program during World War II, and later asked Maassab to focus on a live virus vaccine.

1960 Dr. Phillip S. Brachman, Dr. Herman Gold, Dr. Stanley Plotkin, Dr. F. Robert Fekevy, Milton Werrin, and Dr. Norman Ingraham conduct efficacy study for cutaneous anthrax vaccine

1960 United States Army begins Operation Whitecoat testing weopanized anthrax and the anthrax vaccine on Seventh Day Adventists.

Sorry for that I will compile the conspiracy theory from the data gathered by the few who know, who are probably as confused by this as when it was first suggested.

Was Elvis's short stay because of an Anthrax scare that was circulating by protestors/ fans/ hippies because of the American, British radar request?

The Anthrax was supposedly readily available from Anthrax Island of which many Hippies at the time supposedly visited.

No "Danger Anthrax" Sign is going to stop them just cause curiosity.

Back soon with theory...The End!

Gruinard Island was used for Anthrax bomb experiments by the UK in 1942-1943. Representatives of the US military attended the 1943 trials. The island was left contaminated with anthrax until it was decontaminated (according to the MOD) in 1986. Previous decontamination methods adopted during WW2 were limited to setting fire to the gorse. This inept attempt led to anthrax spores being blown out to sea.

During the 1942 experiments, dead sheep were buried at the base of a cliff on the island, then the cliff was brought down on top of them with explosives. It is thought, by the demolition expert, that he used to much explosive which resulted in an anthrax contaminated sheep being blown across the water to the mainland. A farmers dog is said to have found the carcass washed ashore at Mellon Udrigle and this led to an anthrax outbreak amongst sheep on the mainland.

Compensation for the anthrax outbreak was paid to farmers whose animals had died. A cover story was encouraged that stated that the outbreak was caused by an infected animal being swept overboard from a Greek merchant vessel and compensation was paid "on behalf of the Greek Government".

After this cock-up, dead sheep from the 1943 Gruinard Island experiments were disposed of by incineration.

Detonation of Anthrax bomb at Gruinard Island 1943

Porton Scientist taking samples

Sheep incineration at Gruinard 1943

Decontamination at Gruinard, 1943 style!

Gruinard Island was not considered a safe enough area in which new biological warfare experiments with cluster munitions could be conducted. After an exploration of the Essex and Lincolnshire coast-line for an alternative shore-line site, it was decided that this work could not be conducted in the UK and it was transferred to be done in Canada.

Each year from 1947-1968 a small team of Porton scientists would visit Gruinard Island to assess the contamination of the island. From 1972-1978, no inspections were made by Porton scientists. The UK Government, in the 1980s, became worried that terrorists could obtain samples of weaponised anthrax from the island and authorised attempts to conduct decontamination in 1986. By 1990, Gruinard Island was declared free from anthrax by the UK Government.

At no point was Elvis thought to be in any danger of these experiments or their aftermath.
