Japanese are fiercely independent and rational people. I expect them to protect their nation.

I'd hope the Japanese would temper that pride and nationalism (that honestly does make them a strong and successful people) with reality. If the unthinkable happened and either events moved too fast with well considered planning for that in mind or the US failed to fully support Japan's plays here for any reason, it would be among the shortest and most decisive wars in history.

I wasn't planning to put it so bluntly or harshly for how under-powered and woefully inadequate Japan would be to any kind of real fight with China until I actually saw the numbers. Unfair Matchup is almost an understatement.

Military Comparison between China and Japan - All Areas

The only way China would lose is by either not committing enough to accomplish the task (Ask Tibet about that ..err.. uhh.. Actually, it doesn't even exist on maps anymore
) which they sure aren't known for or the U.S. did push to the point of showing we'd be willing to go into a real fight over whatever was happening, IMO.

Of course, this isn't Japan's "fault". They've been constitutionally restricted from building a meaningful military and the understanding (with very large, current bases to emphasize it) is that the US will become their defender if it came to that.

It is well known that Japan is dependent on the US at present for security.

Thats why Japan should move fast to increase size of military.

The Chinese are not yet ready for a major military move. Japan still has time.

However if Japan loses even a single day now, they will find themselves in increasing trouble.

US is no longer a guarantee of Japan's security.

The US has fairly substantial forces in Japan, including a Nimitz class carrier, and a couple of Air Force units there. They are capable of defending Japan, and will be there for a long time. The Nimitz just moved out there a couple of years ago, and will be there for years to come.

I am aware of US forces in Japan.

Thats why I said Japan still has time as long as US is there.

USA will not be there for Japan forever. The USA has to adjust to lower economic levels which includes cutbacks in the size of military.

It will not be possible for USA to defend Japan 3-4 years down the road.

You really haven't followed the budget cuts have you. The forces in Japan aren't going anywhere, even three or four years from now.

There will be more cuts which are not yet announced.

The very words spoken by Bernanke last month about "tapering" were troubling. It is been reversed to some degree since then.

Reasonable people understand it this way that US is finding it hard to sell bonds.

The QE has given rise to barter agreements between nations; as reserve banks get fearful about their US dollar holdings.

A lot is happening my friend. You have to get beyond the military viewpoint.

Even if further cuts happen, forces in Japan are fairly safe from them. The focus of the Pentagon is currently Asia and the Pacific. That means that the last forces that will be cut will be from there. At least 60% of Naval forces will be located in the Pacific Fleet. Which means that PACAF will remain in the region for years to come.

That makes sense as commerce with East Asia is critical to US economy.

However Japan needs to start building its forces. For that, it has to start by building domestic consensus.

I am happy about the shift in Japan's policy.

I just can't believe some people here keeps saying China has never invaded anyone, please say those things to Tibet, Mongolia and all his other neighbours.

The only thing that's holding back China doing a full invasion on Taiwan or the Philippines is definitely the US and China indeed tried invading Vietnam but got kicked in the butt.

Why dont you read some history. Before china went into tibet,
tibet was a hell hole where most of the population were slaves,
dying from starvation, tortured in horrible ways etc.

This tbread is filled with feat and war mongers.

ohh that justifies China then to invade? wow, so if I see your house getting decrepit and un-maintained it's excusable for me to raze it to the ground?

Substantiating a losing argument seems your best forte.

To "liberate" the people. But i guess thats okay, right?

Wow.. That's one way to describe raping and annexing a nation. I learned a radically different version of the way Tibet was invaded, raped blind for resources, annexed outright and then literally erased from the maps. Anyone who suggests this was in *ANY* way positive for Tibet needs to ask the Dalai Lama about how life on the run from the Chinese feels and knowing that's a life long situation?

I just don't know how else to put it than to say our take on events is just polar opposite with Tibet.

Your first reasoning was China NEVER invaded anyone and when you've been proven wrong, here you come again making an excuse US and UK has been doing it, so which stance you really want to stand on? I don't like China and I don't like what its doing from its state sanctioned counterfeiting, hacking up to land grabbing on its weaker neighbours and i'm vocal about it, so why not just say how i say it too, that you approve of everything what China is currently doing and you wish you were a Han chinese with forked tongue? or maybe you really is...

I doubt this guy is even a westerner, he sounds very much like a chinese propagandist like this article below.

www.rappler.com...

This is with regards to China's spat against the Philippines accusing the latter of provoking a war with China with its aggression. This is my first time to ever heard a very weak nation that can't even hardly defend itself for a week threatening a giant? It's China who has been encroaching the territories of the Philippines ever since yet they have the gall to announce it's the other way around. China can't be trusted, the former USSR knows it, Vietnam knows it and these two were their former allies!

That's what they tell you on the news, not what really is going on.
They want regular access to oil and wars are to control that region. Otherwise we would have gone into Darfur, but there was no money in it.

I never once said that china was perfect, far from it. But it seems
like some of you know nothing about tibet history under the lama
rule. Yes, it was heaven on earth. Well, it was if you were the lama
and his cronies, who lived like kings while the tibet population was
living a living hell. I have not once said that china went into tibet without
doing horrible things. As for tibet being part of china, that is a long
debate that has divided peoples opinions.

China was a very different country back then. Tibet was under lama rule,
and that rule saw the population of tibet as slaves, dying of starvation, tortured
in horrible ways. And all this while the lama and his cronies lived like kings.

Tibet is a damn better place than it was under lama rule. I never said that china
was perfect, because they are not. But the debate that tibet is part of china has
been going on for years, with historians split on the mayter.

Can the same be said about the west invading the middle east, and
doing horrible things?

I dont see china starting wars, i see the west starting wars. Bet
i guess thats ok because its the good old west !.Keeping us "safe"
