Lately just out of mostly boredom I've done a little reading on space programs wondering how things are progressing and past missions and was surprised to find out about the chinese space station, the russian venus probes along with the indian space program etc...
We don't see much if any reporting in the news on NASA's work anymore we used to but we as far as I know we never saw these other nations efforts reported on western MSM.
It just makes me wonder is this intentional? To make the west seem so much more technologically superior?

Thoughts

Boncho... you're terrible.

*Rooting for Temple one!*

OP, well as long as I've been alive there has never been an open policy of information exchange between the powers around us who blow up metal sticks to get small tin cans into space.

America does it, so Russia does it cheaper with a monkey. Then China says they've done it magnanimously number one.

India takes your calls while building their own stick station, and some joe with a balloon sends up his mobile phone on a string.

I don't see any of them letting the others know about their plans or failures. Only their successes, and well after the fact. Which is a shame in this day and age. Ahh everything is a shame in this day and age. The bigger the machine we build, we only see how incapable of operating it we are.

Not sure about the States, but here in UK we get coverage of their latest launches on BBC and the like. I wouldn't lump everyone in and say "Western media", it would be more accurate to say "US Media", given they have a track record of not paying much attention to anything outside the USA.

Here are some links to get you started, but as you can clearly see from a quick 5 minute search of just one "western" media outlet, there is no blackout on Russian/Chinese space missions at all.

BBC report about the latest Shenzou

China President makes video call to Space Station

BBC coverage of Chinese media's response to the latest mission

It is worth noting that Russia does not do much of note on it's own any more, quite often, Russian launches are in conjunction with NASA/ESA missions.

Nice one.

In response to the OP - the BBC infrequently report on this. I guess it hurts the pride of the US for them to be seen to be falling behind so it probably gets buried on some "specialist regional programming" in the wee small hours of the morning.

NASA report regularly on the Soyuz launches to the ISS. As for other projects, there are occasional reports at BBC and other media sites. On Facebook, you can "Like" pages for various space agencies and space programs, such as China Space and Roscosmos, or visit websites like russianspacenews.com...

I'm sure you have read about the recent Russian mission with animals in space.

Western news of non-western space projects are there, you just need to find them ;-)

imho...the US media is self-obsessed and barely mentions anything outside, not from rudeness or hostility, just awareness. I think the media people are convinced Joe Public doesn't care so they won't bother doing te stories. plus it can be expensive to do remotes from places like Baikonour (and I wonder how receptive the Russian and Chinese gummints are to media), and the US media has been cutting way back on $ the last few years.

I would like to see/hear more. I do google on occasion. I'm very impressed by what Russia and China are doing in space and wish them the best.

My intention was never to intimate a cover up or the like I just found it interesting that we don't hear about any of it without searching...
I'm Australian and have never seen anything about anyone but the US space program on tv or in the papers which is what I really meant.
I was quite surprised to see that Russia had put robotic probes on Venus years ago and had never heard anything of it!

Heck, many people in states didn't know about middle east before 9/11, goes to show.

TV is most people's teacher.

Also, people need to be reassured that there is no freedom outside of America.

That was front-page news when I was living in Los Angeles, at the time. These days I still see CNN mention Ariane launches when they happen. When Kaguya was orbiting the Moon, its Earthrise video got a lot of play in the MSM. Ironically, the HD video camera was just a public relations tool.. Scratch that - the word "just" that is - Public relations is hugely important when it can fire the imaginations of would-be scientists and engineers. Much of the technological revolution of the 70s & 80s was done by people who were kids when Apollo demonstrated that we really have no limits if we have the will and the perseverance to see it done. What I meant to say is that the HDTV on Kaguya had limited scientific value but got most of the attention, while other instruments, such as the multispectral imager, did the heavy science.

China got some MSM press with their manned orbital missions and Chang'e moon missions, however both China & India have both shot themselves in the foot, PR-wise, by not making their lunar probe images available to the public the way NASA has.

As others have pointed out, Russia just doesn't do much exploring on its own, these days.

As far as I am aware Facebook is not available in China, so anything on there must be for PR to the West only.

The Chinese space station had 3 astronauts visit and stay there recently in June for (what seemed like) 4-5 days perhaps. It was covered on the news fairly well. I have a feeling some countries like Switzerland can get CCTV9 which is in English so maybe other countries can pick this up as well. The Chinese English newspapers cover the space events too.

I agree that the Chinese would score a real victory if they released their photos and data to the public as I think there are probably many world scientists who are frustrated by the poor quality of the US releases of data.

India has not posted its 40,000+ lunar images either so it is difficult to believe there is not a cover-up going on somewhere between India and NASA.
