i use an Alfa Long Range Wireless 802.11b/g USB 2.0 Network Adapter

and teh Interwebs has always been free for me
my 1st year on the web, before i got into wireless, was via free dial-up [shudders]
thanks to a computer repair that was paid for with a slip of paper

with the phone #, login and password used by the local Phone Co./ISP technicians
written on it
