I do agree all animals that we eat or use deserve a decent pain free death and a pain free life.
I did a summer once as a goatherder in Italy they can be right naughty buggers and then they laugh at you after they have rammed you up the bum lol so beware

Mark my words on this.

In my opinion, the recent hose meat scandel in the US and Britian was just a trail run, to see how it went over with the population. Despite the outcry their verdict was that their trail was successful based on the acceptance that went with the time it was out there before it was detected.

This horse meat slaughterhouse permit is just the begining.

In my opinion, TPTB are going to transfer Americians and the rest of us away from cow and sheep meat to horse meat, just to rub our nose in it, simply because they can do it, second rate meat for second rate people.

You will soon hear all the right people saying telling us all about how good horse meat is and how good it is for us, how good it is for the environment, no more farting cows for example.

This is just the NWO types putting the boots into us for a laugh, just to prove to those of us who are aware just how easy the masses are to manipulate. - Mark my words

Horse meat taste like Moose meat, every type of animal is consumed around the world including human , don't see whats so shocking about horse meat. Not saying killing another being is right but we have been doing it for thousands of years, millions actually , don't see it stopping any time soon.

People have been eating Horse Meat for as long as any other animal has been on the menu.

Go to any deli in many parts of Europe, and you can purchase some very tasty sausages made with Horse Meat.

Asia has many menu items with Horse Meat at the heart of the dish.

Go on.

Try some Chevaline today, and live a little.

This is very interesting.
As a people we've been eating horse for many thousands of years.
Asia has a higher rate of horse consumption than the rest of the world.
But you still find horse being served in europe.
This may not be such a bad thing.

I hear horse meat is very good.

The thing is, vegetarianism is typically put forth with more than a little condescension. Why? Is ending the life of a plant (which happens frequently with many plants that are eaten) any less atrocious than ending the life of an animal? Is it because a horse is more cuddly than a head of lettuce?

Is this a serious question? I thought it went without saying that ending the life of a plant is less atrocious than ending the life of an animal. Even assuming sentience between the two is the same, and it isn't, there's a huge difference in regards to what's necessary. Vegetarians eat plants not because they need to.

My god, comparing a horse to a lettuce. Next you'll be arguing that eating chicken wings is no worse than turning cannibal and farming humans

I had horse once. When I lived in Japan. It was 'at the bar' as snacks. People eat dogs and cats. Meat is meat. (I haven't had dog or cat.) The one thing I wouldn't try was raw jelly fish (also served in Japan). that just wasn't going to happen.

Zebra tastes fine. Haven't tried horse, that I know of.

Many horses are not fit to be "pets." Old horses need to be put down--and doing so before they can no longer walk is better than the alternative. The meat in our dog-food must come from somewhere.

If a horse is gonna be slaughtered, it is more humane to do so after a short trip than after a long miserable trip to Mexico.

very true plants are conscious . here is a documentary.

poor op might starve to death after realizing that plants are alive and conscious as well as animals

You guys are so silly. Ethical vegetarianism is about causing minimal harm, not about starving to death.

And plants are absolutely NOT as conscious as animals, that's an utterly preposterous claim. A fern does not have the consciousness of a sparrow which does not have the consciousness of a horse which does not have the consciousness of a human being.

With the vegetarian position of causing minimal harm, there is nothing contradictory in abstaining from meat while eating plants.

I don't understand why so many try to misrepresent vegetarianism and present it as a foolish thing, when in actuality it's every bit as logical as it is ethical. The arguments in favour of vegetarianism can't be denied, vegetarianism is only idiotic when it's misrepresented.

People who eat meat and try to dirty the name of vegetarians by pretending to care about plants are living in cloud cuckoo land. It would be like an individual who drives a hummer 2 miles to work each day berating someone who travels 100 miles a day for driving a hybrid vehicle as a hypocrite, because hybrid vehicles also damage the environment. Somebody doing that would surely miss the point, the point being that nobody can expect somebody in that circumstance to cause zero harm, that's unrealistic, driving a hybrid car causes minimal harm however and that's why it's the ethical and logical thing to do.

Vegetarians don't claim to be causing no harm, what they're trying to do is cause as little harm/suffering as possible within reason. If you want to make an argument against vegetarianism so you feel better about yourself then your best bet would be to look into the agricultural and environmental consequences of a world in which the majority are vegetarian; there's plenty of discussions and conjecture about that. Shouting "plants are conscious" just makes you look foolish because it's obvious you don't understand what you're arguing against. Just a heads up in future so you don't embarrass yourself.

You must be the last man on the deal team. A slaughterhouse for horses was reopened in Missouri last year. These animals (the dumbest I have ever seen other than those who own them) have been turned loose in the midwest because the horse "lovers" you refer to cannot afford to feed them. We have a horsebuyer here in Iowa who buys these animals for a few hundred bucks and hauls them to the slaughterhouse in Missouri.

Unfortunately, this poster is right on the money (except that I seriously doubt the horsebuyer pays more than $100 for any horse). I've been to an auction (and never went back). A friend took me once, but man, it is heartbreaking. I don't think this friend had the same reaction, but I would NOT recommend an animal lover ever go. I didn't see any horse go for more than $150. Horse magazines are full of free horses or cheap horses, because the real cost of them is owning them.

I'm a horse lover and owner (and I'll agree with your dumb assessment, as it costs me $100 a week to feed and keep 3 of them, and that's with them being in OUR stable)....but, I like to keep the wife happy (and kind of our side business).

I don't eat filler meat, I just don't, and this is one reason. As the poster I quoted said, this actually isn't new, it's been going on a while. My problem (besides the ethics, which is enough), is that kept horses are full of all kinds of medicines, supplements, etc., and that could get scary from a meat angle. I am well aware of the historical usage of horse meat, and while I couldn't think of eating my friend, I realize others do....but even if you don't have a cultural issue with it, there is the meat contamination issue to consider.....

Cultural thing. A lot of Americans simply don't eat the flesh of animals they classify as "pets". Just feels wrong.

Plants are not conscious.

My mother used to tell stories of how during the great depression the government used to handle meat portions to the people, my mother was very young at the time but she said that her mother used to complain that it was horses meat, because the meat was very hard and gummy due to be so lean and when it was cooking it will bubble up, the flavor was not as good as cow meat

Unless they dirty manufactures of meat for mass production will fatten the horses with hormones the meat will be akin to eating deer meat.

Where ever you got that information, it flies in the face of current science. Even as of a year ago.

Which "uni" did you attend, so I can make sure my kids avoid it?

ETA: a philosophy class determined this?
ok

Philosophy is an important discipline. But it is only as good as the logic used. I am unsure how any philosopher could determine that a plant was no conscious. There are just not enough facts available to think real hard about it and come up with an answer. Empiricism is needed.

Well...at least there hasn't been a Mad Horse Disease or Horse Flu virus.

So, maybe it would be good to have horse meat in market. But I like horses. So I won't eat the meat.
