(KCEN) -- A group of soldiers are preparing for their deployment to Egypt with riot training on post.
They're planning ahead for violent protests or riots and the possibility of protecting the country's border with Israel.
The officials both emphasized this is contingency planning in advance of the expected demonstrations to ensure American military assets, including rescue forces, can act if needed. In the event Americans had to be evacuated from Egypt and could not get to the airport due to the unrest, there are about 2,000 additional Marines on board three Navy warships in the Red Sea, officials said.
ALEXANDRIA/CAIRO (Reuters) - Two people, one an American, were killed when protesters stormed an office of Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood in Alexandria on Friday, adding to growing tension ahead of mass rallies aimed at unseating the Islamist president. Leading clerics warned of "civil war" after violence in the past week that has left several dead and hundreds wounded. They backed President Mohamed Mursi's offer to talk to opposition groups ahead of Sunday's protests.
