Child porn.

I suppose that probably didn't need a drum-roll and most people saw what was coming:

Alleged victim is a 15-year-old girl

I am actually glad that when I was in high school technology wasn't advanced enough for cell phones to take pictures and video. God knows what some of my friends (and possibly me) would have done with it. Luckily that didn't come available until I was respectful enough to use the tech properly.

Unfortunately, technology is so accessible to todays youth, if you went back in time and explained how much, they'd consider kids today as cyborgs. And the most unfortunate part is kids are irresponsible but are playing around with things that can land them in jail or give them a sex offender status for years to come.

Halifax police have charged a 14-year-old Preston-area boy with making and distributing child pornography after a video was posted on a social media site.

Police said they were alerted on April 8 about an online video. It showed a 15-year-old girl performing a consensual sexual act with a 14-year-old boy.

"What I can tell you is that the sex act was consensual between the suspect and the victim," said Const. Pierre Bourdages. "However the victim did not consent to this interaction be recorded or videotaped."

Officers said they believe the suspect shot the video on April 5 at a party where alcohol was served.

Bourdages said the video was posted online, and then "tagged" to make more people aware that it was there. He said it was online for two days before it was flagged to police by an adult.

"The video was taken down very quickly by the social media site," said Bourdages.

I'm not really going to defend the kid for posting the video online, because that was a pretty asinine thing to do. But I'm pretty sure kids would have been doing this for the last 5,000 years if the technology was available.

Kids don't think long term... And they think with the wrong head, without considering the repercussions of their actions. Should it be criminalized is the main question?

This story is getting attention because of a couple suicides in Canada where young girls had their pictures posted previously. You can see it at the bottom when they reference one of those stories.

It seems the media is trying to scare kids straight.

And, for all the cases that have slipped by, this one, the kid will probably be made an example of for purely political reasons.

For sure there should be some kind of punishment for the kid's dumb behaviour here, but I'm not sure if I can condone with legal action. You can look back through history and there has been a number of geniuses with some rather odd sexual behaviour. But in today's society, a simple criminal background can totally nix one's professional career for the rest of their lives.

"Oh but he should have thought about that before...blah blah blah!"

Yeah, but as I said not all cases will be prosecuted. If you did, you'd probably be putting a quarter of the population behind bars, or completely limiting their chance of a future professional wise.

Roughly 20 percent of teens admit to participating in "sexting," according to a nationwide survey (pdf) by the National Campaign to Support Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

www.cbsnews.com...

If 1 in 5 do it and admit it, how many do it but didn't admit it on that survey?

Link for the original story.

Mind you, the current laws include the girls too who are involved in this matters. So this isn't just about boys. If every case was prosecuted imagine the repercussions the law would have on society.

In this case, the girl says she didn't agree to the video being made, but I find it kind of hard to believe unless the video was hidden in the room somewhere.

I think it might of been one of those cases where, it wasn't unwanted until it happened to pop up on FB. But who knows, to be quite honest, I don't really want to know all the details in a case like this.

I don't what is needed here, kids maybe need some realistic guidance instead of the puritanical nonsense that makes them act out against it, or maybe just better education in the classroom. I think parents trying to avoid it altogether, or shame kids leads to more confusion on their part.

Like in this case where you can't help feel sorry for someone so bloody confused.

The following is an obvious troll posted on a FB confessional, but I fear with the backwards thinking of some youth, and the complete confusion they are suffering because of identity issues and moral indignation forced on them, something like this is bound to happen for real:

My ex-boyfriend raped me today. Well, not today, more like, last month. I just found out about it today. See, he promised to marry me if I had sex with him, but he found out that I cheated last night, and broke up with me this morning. How can I get the police to side with me on this?

www.facebook.com...

So I guess my question is, is do you think kids should be criminalized, or should there be a special program or means of correcting their problem behaviour so they don't get completely screwed before even having the chance to go to college?

I haven't made an Boncho Jr.s yet, but sometimes I cringe at what I'm going to be faced with in 18-25 years. (Time is drawing near for grow'd up life).

When you mix technology with raging teenaged hormones the result is a cocktail of stupidity. Since the details say there was alcohol at the party something tells me that permission to record was not an issue until the video showed up in public. It seems a case of "bragging rights" with video evidence, and while not legal (an underaged girl cannot legally consent to her image being used regardless of whether or not she was aware of the recording) I feel what the boy did was more stupid than criminal.

This is a new day and age and parents need to discuss this sort of thing with their kids to prevent such acts if possible, but kids will be kids. Long gone are the days of unprotected sex being the biggest worry of parents of teens as now many other issues must be discussed in "The Talk". I am grateful my kids are grown, that's for sure!

I believe there should be a required course, in fifth grade, dealing solely with the dangers of the Internet. This would include keeping info private, avoiding predators online, how to deal with cyber bullying, and the legal/social ramifications of what can happen when you post certain material online.

As you mentioned, Boncho, teenagers don't think. If we can get this info to them before puberty starts it might help them make wiser choices down the line.

There ya go Smylee! Why not draw up the course and present it formally to TPTB? Course design in your future maybe? I'm serious here, and I hope you give it some serious thought. I think you'd be perfect for that.

Boncho, this question must be addressed in a different manner from what we've seen so far, because there hasn't been any perceptible change for the better in regards to this subject.

Done it three years now....no budget. I've even offered to do a seminar for parents, after school, for free. Not enough interest.

No interest? Someone out there just has to be. How about law enforcement prevention? In Canada they seem to be taking the lead. Maybe partner with FBI or something? I dunno, but when someone like you offers solutions to problems, someone out there ought to be mighty interested. Don't give up though. Perhaps you just have not found the right person or organization to open doors for you. This is a real problem to which you're offering an intelligent and plausible solution. It could be a Public Health research project. Whatever you do, do not give up!

Thank you for the encouragement. It really means a lot.

I'll keep proposing the course and offering free sessions for parents. Part of the problem may be that a lot of our students don't have computers. I don't know.

I proposed having a week long summer camp for the kids about computers, where we could have the safety talks included, but there's no money. I even volunteered my time but there's no money to turn the electricity on in the building (or at least that's what they said).

I'm talking with someone through our local community college about teaching some courses there part time. It would be for adults, but that would be a good step in the right direction.

Well please rest assured that I will be keeping my thinking cap on and will be remaining on the lookout for projects and funding for your idea.
