The number of U.S. citizens visiting Canada's main immigration Web site has shot up six-fold as Americans play with the idea of abandoning their homeland after President Bush's election. Seems like they don't want him in office after all. The website hit an all-time high the day after the elections.

story.news.yahoo.com
On an average day some 20,000 people in the United States log onto the Web site, www.cic.gc.ca -- a figure which rocketed to 115,016 on Wednesday. The number of U.S. visits settled down to 65,803 on Thursday, still well above the norm.

Bush's victory sparked speculation that disconsolate Democrats and others might decide to start a new life in Canada, a land that tilts more to the left than the United States.

Asked whether an applicant would be looked upon more sympathetically if they claimed to be a sad Democrat seeking to escape four more years of Bush, Iadinardi replied: "There would be no weight given to statements of feelings."

The idea of increased immigration by unhappy Americans is triggering some amusement in Canada. Commentator Thane Burnett of the Ottawa Sun newspaper wrote a tongue-in-cheek guide to would-be new citizens on Friday.

The waiting time to become a citizen is shorter for people married to Canadians, which prompted the birth of a satirical Web site called www.marryanamerican.ca.

Seems like the U.S. citizens have to choose one again betwen the lesser of two evils - Living in Canada, or being under the power of Bush.

As Canadians, you'll have to learn to embrace and use all the products and culture of Americans, while bad-mouthing their way of life.

Sounds good to me, the only turn off I have towards Canada is the freezing cold weather!

That's a fear driven reaction.

Americans need to stay home and get pollitically active not run to another country.

Get rid of the voting machines and make sure the next round of election in 2006 are clean. Democracy can be rebuilt.

Help rebuild it.

I just caught a glimplse of a report on FoxNews about the famous Hollywood types planning on leaving the US in search of alternate citizenship. There was a comment about this being up to a 4 year ordeal (possibly citizenship to Canada?), about time for the 08 election. I wish I saw the whole thing...I'll see if I can dig it up.

[expletive delete] that. I am not going to Cananda. I have no reason to go to Canada because Bush is president for another term. These people are crazy. I'm not an idiot. I am not going to Canada. I'm going to my [parents] native land... Mexico. Only if things get worse of course...

I'm an American and I view that some people take things far too seriously. Bush is a terrible president, but he isn't bad enough which the solution to their state would involve moving to a different country, that's a little extreme. But since many Americans are considering immigrating to another foreign country, I do view that the new Bush administration needs to take things much more seriously than they are now.

Its better than facing the possibility of a draft, and going to war. I'd rather move to Canada than face the horror of war. If I had the monetary resources to move than I would too.

Subtle!

As a Canadian living in Texas, I cannot understand why Americans think that fleeing their country is the answer to their political disagreements... What a country of wussies. Geeeze. You are NOT making a "statement" by leaving your country. In any case, odds are, Canada won't let you in. Better just buck up, guys.

Damn... Other countries have "refugees" that flee oppression. You have disgruntled voters who are upset that they didn't get their UN-leashed-president in office and simply don't know what to do now but run. You have a president in power that says "SCREW the UN, we are a SOVEREIGN nation of ARSE KICKERS" and your bleeding hearts just can't take it.

People these days...

I personally dont understand why any of you would want to leave "our" country. That's right it's "ours", the people have spoke and decided on Bush for another 4 more years. Like it or not, I do not see the reason to abandon ship. We all have a stake in this country, most of our relatives fled here to be free and for all thier sacrifices you are just going to get up and move. I personally do not see the gratitude from anyone saying they would leave the United States. We are now living in a time of unrest, War in Iraq, Unhappy Allies, Terrorism, Unemployment etc...
Does this mean bail, run from your problems, Im sorry thats not what "Americans" do! We solve them, compromise, work harder and find a common ground, thats what our ancestors did when they came here.
I truely think if you are that scared or cannot find it in your heart to work and compromise to make the United States a better place you should go to the cemetary and piss on your relatives graves and then with a big smile on your face go to your local immagration office and terminate your citizenship.. because honestly.......... I dont want you here!
