Consumers Will Soon Have Devices In Their Hands To Detect GMO and Toxic Foods

Wow. Well this seems to be a good idea.. I am sure many people worldwide would be grateful for an app or device like this. It is good to see that there are peeps out there who are trying give the mass populace a helping hand with making informed and educated decisions by providing new technology like this..

In the not too distant future, consumers will be able to run on-the-spot tests for environmental toxins, GMOs, pesticides, food safety and more with their smartphones and other hand-held devices

Every human being on every developed nation on Earth, whether living in a rural or isolated area, in the middle of a large city, or near an industrialized area, now contains at least 700 contaminants in their body including pesticides, pthalates, benzenes, parabens, xylenes and many other carcinogenic and endrocrine disrupting chemicals.

“We’re interested in biodetection that needs to be performed outside of the laboratory,” said team leader Brian Cunningham, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and of bioengineering at Illinois.

"Modern biological research is also allowing an extension of laboratory devices on to small computer chips to detect biological information within DNA sequences," said biotech specialist Dr. Marek Banaszewski. "Bioinformatic algorithms within programs will aid the identification of transgenes, promoters, and other functional elements of DNA, making detection of genetically modified foods on-the-spot and real-time without transportation to a laboratory."

The test only takes a few minutes to complete and apparently it is user friendly. And it will walk you through it step by step. The cradle contains about $200 of optical components. However it allegedly performs as accurately as a $50,000 spectrophotometer in the laboratory. This makes it portable and more importantly affordable for field work in developing nations...

In a paper published in the journal Lab on a Chip, the team demonstrated sensing of an immune system protein, but the slide could be primed for any type of biological molecule or cell type. The researchers are working to improve the manufacturing process for the iPhone cradle and are working on a cradle for Android phones as well. They hope to begin making the cradles available next year.

So this device and/or app may be out as soon as next year. I shall be keeping my eyes peeled for any updates and will add them...

I would buy such a device for sure.

I bet Monsatan will try to buy up the tech before it hits the market,but lets hope they can't.

A device like this could change the game-as soon as folks are able to detect GMOs,just watch the profits dive.
Money talks,and loss of profits forces companies to change their ways.

Where I live Monsanto and its frankinseed plus crops are banned. Products are labeled GMO free in regards to corn, rice, soy or other product that could use GMO produce. However, all the neighboring countries ban GMO but still label their items. I suspect it is due to them also being imported to countries that ban GMO foods.

Still with the possibility of manufacturers trying to sneak GMO foods past the inspectors, it's always possible that some do enter the market where they are banned. So this app will be very useful. It's better to be safe than sorry with the likes of Monsanto around.

Honestly. I'd love one of these devices. I REALLY want to know if the corn i'm buying is GMO or not. Because if it's GMO then I surely DO NOT WANT TO BUY IT!

You, and the OP, dont appear to understand what this technology actually is.
And it is NOT the photoshopped artwork of the handheld thing in the picture.

What this thing is, is actually a "label-free photonic crystal biosensor" that happens to use a smartphone as the optical sensor.
It can do an examination of *ONE* purified sample at a time.

So.. for example, you wish to examine some DNA. Well of course you're going to have to exact and purify that first before you place a drop of it on the slide.
Then you get a spectrophotometer result like this...

1. By inserting the artists depiction and making it look like an instant answer consumer device.
2. By changing the wording of something important.

to

It really is a piece of scientific equipment, that lets you examine ONE type of molecule at a time.
You pretty much have to know exactly what you're looking for before you use it. Its not a "lets see if this apple has GMO in it" thing.

Watch this video of the device in action, and then ask yourself "does this look even remotely similar to what preventdisease.com told me it was?"

If this device is going to hit the market soon , politicians who are in favor of Monsanto and GMO should not be allowed to buy it

But realistically if you were to know what was in everything, you would freak because at this point I'm pretty convinced virtually everything is contaminated to varying degrees.
It would be nice to avoid the highly contaminated things though. Without such things you are left with guesswork at best.

I can imagine in the future having a handheld device that could scan for all sorts of things around you, while serving as a communications device among other uses. The technology is currently available to create such devices in decent quality but due to corporate profiteering it is extremely cost prohibitive.

In a truly advanced intelligent society however technologies such as this would be easily accessible and ubiquitous.

Among other gross infractions Monsanto has devised a genetically modified ear of corn, a food product, genetically blended with it's own timed released chemical pesticide so that must be routinely inspected by both the FDA and the EPA. Sick.

I had a friend who made something similar for a mechatronics thesis. His was focused on providing nutritional information where there was none, for example telling you how many carbs are in your restaurant meal - he thought that would make the most money considering how many people diet. Point is, this type of technology is not that far away.

Ohmygawd, here I was reading your post--just before bedtime. Okay, nightmares this evening for sure. Thanks awfully!! Still, I get your point. I live in an area with an exceedingly high cancer rate. Reducing that number could be achieved by getting rid of chemical agriculture. Let me tell you, however, that the moment you raise this matter to the farming community it becomes almost open warfare. The irony is that although the rest of us suffer the deleterious effects of chemicals, the farmers and their families suffer in spades. Seems in our world money trumps health and plain common sense.

Yep I agree with you there. I think if everyone were to truly know what was in the food they eat on a daily basis. Most people would never want to eat again.. That is why gardening and growing your own is so important these days. We grow our own veg and try to buy food stuffs with the least crap in them. Or from food cooperatives. Or wholesale organic stockists.
