Hi peeps..

The bio-dynamic cycles of the moon are well documented. Many of us can feel the affects the moon has on us. Some being more sensitive than others. Not only does the moon affect us it affects micro-organisms and plant growth...

Old folklore and modern science consider this to be beneficial to plant in accordance with the Lunar cycle for optimum growth. This understanding falls under the realms of bio-dynamic gardening. And the link provides useful tips and explanation for those who may wish to give this a try...!

Also the link below seems like a good tool to use

Great subject, Fluff.

My parents and grandparents all planted using the phases of the moon. It was part of my childhood and I try to incorporate it into my gardening regimen.

I think this is an important and timely thread

Thanks Bear...

I have been pondering over it for awhile now. So I thought that there maybe peeps on ATS like yourself who do this already. I have heard many people talk of it over the years and with all the reading I am doing atm. It seems like now is as good a time as any to learn how to plant in accordance with the moon...

Good on you..! Do you have any tips or pointers to enlightenment us with...

Actually, the Farmer's Almanac Link posted above is the best way to go. We always went by the FA and had good success with our plants. If you want root crops, plant in the dark of the moon. If you want leafy vegetation plant in the light of the moon. LOL

It is more detailed than that, but experience shows it works.

Happy Farming all!

My favorite general calendar is also accurate at pinpointing moon phases, best planting days, etc:

www.llewellyn.com...

It is surprising how many errors creep into other calendars. Be careful out there. As you scroll down the Llewellyn's page you will see some other related choices among their calendars: Moon phases, Herbal calendar, etc. I see they now have their 2014 calendar for sale. Tip: Buy a 2014 calendar ASAP...if we have a solar hiccup during the rest of this Solar Max cycle, that way at least you will be able to keep track of what day it is. Sheesh.

I have contributed a lot of this kind of information on the Sustainability group on the LibraryThing website. Users there can add descriptions of their books for free, up to 200 books anyway. The site was developed by professional librarians. I am reincarnated there as Indybooks. I started helping out with that group because of the importance of the subject of sustainability and the seeming inability of the ATS structure to maintain coherent links to subsections of sustainability (sad but apparently true), which is certainly a concern because sustainability is such a wide and deep concept. Here's that link:

www.librarything.com...

Here is an online calendar recommended by the permaculture community:

www.ommas-aarden.net...

ATS peeps in the Southern Hemisphere, we have not forgotten about you. Here's an Australian permaculture calendar:

permacultureaustralia.org.au...

Here is a site that offers moon phase planting for either hemisphere (yes, there are differences by hemisphere, this site says). You can click on the moon phase of interest:

Thank you! Everyone used to know/do this stuff, now seems mostly forgotten. Just wish I had the calendar for the Canadian prairies.

Hi there soficrow...

Lol no worries..! I am sure there must be a calendar for most parts of the world. But the farmers almanac linked below is not for a specific country or region I don't think. Unless I have missed something..? As it says;

The Farmers Almanac Gardening by the Moon Calendar is determined by our age-old formula and applies generally to regions where the climate is favorable.

www.farmersalmanac.com...

I am going to cross reference a few sites with information and maybe plan my own calendar. That way I can see what might work best for where I live. It is hard enough trying to get things to grow up here as it is. So I am intrigued as to whether planting by the moon will help my poor plants...!
