You said it. I think no more than five million should go to the winners. Once somebody gets all the numbers and wins the 5 million, the rest of the money should be split up between those that hit five numbers, and if that still comes to over five mil for each, then the rest gets divvied up by the four number winners. Of course, this only applies if I don't win the jackpot.

Up to $10.000.000 is what a lot of people really need and can somehow handle and manage....Anything more than that is going to cause lots of problems for people who have never had that much money in their lives before....It is like giving $100.000 to a four year old,he would probably spend it all on the biggest screen TV then buys a lot of candy and chips with cases of drinks to wash it all down while he enjoys watching non stop sponge bob or something....Wait a minute that sounds very familiar.

It's too bad that people should be unhappy for someone who lucked out so well. Many no-talent people are allowed to prosper simply by being born.

Powerball is simply a game. This time it came with a huge payoff. Hitting a 21 on blackjack isn't too hard, yet you won't find many who could place a bet, or take a bet, for a couple hundred million. Powerball is a lottery. There really isn't a scheme to win, unless you bought every single combination to the tune of 176 million odd dollars, you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Think of it as a big fundraiser. Hopefully the winner is the poorest, most impoverished person in the world. That person would inject much money back into the economy, local or otherwise. If they even had half a brain. Problem would be keeping the vultures at bay.

If the jackpot was 590M $, then you should be assured that the amount coming in was at least twice that. So say that 1.3B $ was generated... Where does the rest go? That almost seems like a better way to raise revenue as opposed to just taxing people or just being a cutthroat 'business man'. Anyway, if the winner was smart, they would take the cash option which would be less than half the advertised amount. Plus the 40+ % owed in taxes on the winnings. Still tons of money though.

My point is mainly... Way to go winner! Spend the money well, because it isn't welfare.

If I remember correctly, lottery winnings in the US are taxable income, is that still the case? If so, I reckon the IRS will be knocking on someones door pronto for their cut!

Just think how much the guys running the game take in every single day.

A 600 million dollar prize every now and then is a drop in the water compared to the profit they take.

That's because when the recipient dies, they don't have to pay anymore. Most of lotto winners do not get all the money at once, they end up getting annuities of like $20,000 a month for life, so it works in the Lotto's favor if someone in their 90's wins the ticket and the rest of it? Probably goes in some executive's offshore accounts for his own retirement.
