Couldn't be someone that needs it. But then again, half a billion isn't what anyone actually needs. Peace

You said it. I think no more than five million should go to the winners. Once somebody gets all the numbers and wins the 5 million, the rest of the money should be split up between those that hit five numbers, and if that still comes to over five mil for each, then the rest gets divvied up by the four number winners. Of course, this only applies if I don't win the jackpot.

Exactly. I like the exemption clause.

Up to $10.000.000 is what a lot of people really need and can somehow handle and manage....Anything more than that is going to cause lots of problems for people who have never had that much money in their lives before....It is like giving $100.000 to a four year old,he would probably spend it all on the biggest screen TV then buys a lot of candy and chips with cases of drinks to wash it all down while he enjoys watching non stop sponge bob or something....Wait a minute that sounds very familiar.

The winning ticket was sold at a Publix in Zephyrhills Florida, the little town known for their pure water products.
Wonder how long it will take for the winner to step forward with the ticket?
Some winners seek legal advice before collecting which sounds like a good idea.
Can't imagine anyone not checking their numbers after a big win like this.

It's too bad that people should be unhappy for someone who lucked out so well. Many no-talent people are allowed to prosper simply by being born.

Money doesn't exactly generate means.

Powerball is simply a game. This time it came with a huge payoff. Hitting a 21 on blackjack isn't too hard, yet you won't find many who could place a bet, or take a bet, for a couple hundred million. Powerball is a lottery. There really isn't a scheme to win, unless you bought every single combination to the tune of 176 million odd dollars, you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Think of it as a big fundraiser. Hopefully the winner is the poorest, most impoverished person in the world. That person would inject much money back into the economy, local or otherwise. If they even had half a brain. Problem would be keeping the vultures at bay.

If the jackpot was 590M $, then you should be assured that the amount coming in was at least twice that. So say that 1.3B $ was generated... Where does the rest go? That almost seems like a better way to raise revenue as opposed to just taxing people or just being a cutthroat 'business man'. Anyway, if the winner was smart, they would take the cash option which would be less than half the advertised amount. Plus the 40+ % owed in taxes on the winnings. Still tons of money though.

My point is mainly... Way to go winner! Spend the money well, because it isn't welfare.

If I remember correctly, lottery winnings in the US are taxable income, is that still the case? If so, I reckon the IRS will be knocking on someones door pronto for their cut!

Just think how much the guys running the game take in every single day.

A 600 million dollar prize every now and then is a drop in the water compared to the profit they take.

Just like casinos. Its a business. Nobody opens a business unless they are making more money than their original investment.

600 Million, Oh the fun I could have.

'The Lottery, with its weekly pay-out of enormous prizes, was the one public event to which the proles paid serious attention. It was probable that there were some millions of proles for whom the Lottery was the principal if not the only reason for remaining alive. It was their delight, their folly, their anodyne, their intellectual stimulant. Where the Lottery was concerned, even people who could barely read and write seemed capable of intricate calculations and staggering feats of memory. There was a whole tribe of men who made a living simply by selling systems, forecasts, and lucky amulets. Winston had nothing to do with the running of the Lottery, which was managed by the Ministry of Plenty, but he was aware (indeed everyone in the party was aware) that the prizes were largely imaginary. Only small sums were actually paid out, the winners of the big prizes being non-existent persons. In the absence of any real intercommunication between one part of Oceania and another, this was not difficult to arrange.'

Of course.

Some blued haired raisin with 8.5 Months to live on the Golf Course.

Couldn't be someone that needs it. But then again, half a billion isn't what anyone actually needs.

Peace

That's because when the recipient dies, they don't have to pay anymore. Most of lotto winners do not get all the money at once, they end up getting annuities of like $20,000 a month for life, so it works in the Lotto's favor if someone in their 90's wins the ticket and the rest of it? Probably goes in some executive's offshore accounts for his own retirement.

*knock knock*

Who's there?

*IRS*

But. . but . . I didn't win the lottery!

*We know. But we heard you voted republican last election*

I didn't win. I had to break the news to my wife and son this morning. There were tears, screams, shouts, sobbing. . . . but then they calmed me down and I am much better now.

Well, you won at least $4.00 and maybe even $12.00, like I did.
It's better than nothing

Unless you spent more than your pay off.
Did you break-even maybe?
Cheers

Or the winner, upon close inspection, will be the sister-in-law of the president of the company running the lotto. Games of chance have since the beginning of time attracted con artists of every strip; they are rigged more often than not.

Theoretically an insider could scan the lottery database to determine all the sold number combinations and then rig a live drawing with the winning combination purchased by a shill. Pay me $10,000 and I'll pretend to be the winner playing my "system".

You see the store where the ticket was bought was named PubliX which ends with a roman numeral 10.
Its quite common for happily married couples to have two children spaced a year apart aged 13, and 14.
While you are thinking in pairs 22 is a pair of 11s and also the 22nd letter of the alphabet "V".
V is close to W and "W" is the first letter in the word (W)heel like a bicycle wheel specifically a Mavic XP22 which usually has two sets of 11 "ball" bearings.
There are 52 weeks in a year.

Now I never would have thought to pick the "11" for the powerball number because after greasing the bicycle wheel I'd be thinking who needs a third set of bearings?

Fortunately my wife ordered the "special K" instead of the $2.95 breakfast Croissant so we won.

pay up!

I truly don't believe that one person should own all that money.

And if they do own all that money, they should spend it on trying to feed the hungry and other good deeds that truly matter. Not on materialistic possessions.

Money creates greed and a lust for materialism. I have never played the lotto and never will.

Money can't solve your problems. It can't make life spiritually better, nor can it buy you true, undying love.

Only love can save us from the depths of destruction.

Money cannot.
