While a lot of mobile phone these days have something that looks like an off button, the unit still uses some level of power. If you really want to preserve your privacy then you do need to take the battery out, also removing the SIM card while you are at it is a good idea.

Thank You... I was wondering if anyone else was going to mention this. Powered Off & no battery are not the same.

And as far as privacy goes... TPTB have had the ability since the rotary-dial days to connect to your phone without it ringing and using the mouthpiece to listen to everything in the room I think the term was called "infinite repeater".
