The US is poised to push Japan off the top of the supercomputing chart with IBM's prototype Blue Gene/L machine.

It is being assembled for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, a US Department of Energy lab (DOE).

DOE test results show that Blue Gene/L has managed speeds of 70.72 teraflops. The current top machine, Japan's NEC Earth Simulator, clocks up 35.86.

Due next week, the Top 500 list officially charts the fastest computers in the world.

It is announced every six months and is worked out using an officially recognised mathematical speed test called Linpack which measures calculations per second.

The speeds will most likely make it the fastest computer system on the planet, yet the chip technology powering the machine is the kind which can be found in familiar devices like games consoles.

What exactly are these super computers being used for? I know one from Japan was being used for some type of Mapping Earth or the weather. It's been so long ago I can't even remember.

Are they just working to see how big they can get them and sell them to places such as NORAD and Langley? Or using prototypes to create them and better their products?

"But it remains to be seen just how stable the system will be once completed. Among its ultimate tasks, the completed version of BlueGene/L will be used to carry out complex simulations designed to assess the condition of ageing nuclear weapons."

ah there you are, Ive opened a thread about this , but closed yet...

we can talk about this here! :-)

Now look at that! now you can buy him!

"IBM today announced that Blue Gene is officially going on sale with a starting price of $1.5 million. "

source: www.enterpriseitplanet.com...

We, all save some money than lump together
..and buy this machine! imagine: ATS/BTS: supportet by Blue Gene IBM

No matter what, computers aren't capable of parallel processing, only the humans brain are.

P.S: How much do one of those cost? I am thinking of buying it with my allowances.

well, it's an IBM Machine. i don't think it's going to run on Unix or Linux.

and one more thing, parallel processing is possibile. correct me if im wrong.

yes, parallel processing is available since Windows2000, but I think in this machine are more than two CPUs in it

The OS must be a "extra" developed software..dont know what..any ideas, dudes?

I dont see why not, i mean Linux and Unix seem to be far more compatible with IMB servers and laptops than any other manufacturer not to mention IBM are pumping a lot of money into this court battle against SCO who in turn are being supported by M$.

Personally there is no chance in hell that id install an M$ operating system on a machine that expensive.

for an operating system. Since the 390 kernel is by far the most stable on the planet as well as the 390 scales better than any other platform on the planet I would imagine that it runs Z/Os. Now I am a retired IBM'er so that's my guess.

People, Google is your friend.

It's a version of Linux, where the master node runs Linux and the slave nodes run a simplified kernel.
