Hi all

Some lighter news now. Researcher's in India have come up with a new water purification system that in not just affordable to those in third world countries but also very beneficial...

Researchers at India's Institute of Technology Madras have developed a new kind of portable water purification system based on nanoparticle filtration. In their paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team explains how their new device does its job—it employs nanoparticles to remove not just biological hazards, but toxic heavy metals as well.

The system they have developed is a two-stage filtration process that provides 10 liters of clean water in just an hour's time.

The result is an extremely inexpensive portable water purification device—the system cost is comparable to other portable filtration systems, but the processing itself comes to less than $3 per year. The filters are good for approximately one year (3,600 liters) and filtration can be run more than once per day if needed. The researchers believe their device is capable of providing all the drinking water a family of four would need

phys.org...

So now families on disturbingly low incomes may soon have access to clean water whenever they need it.

Peace
Fluff

Hmmm...were do i buy them...??

I want to send a few hundred to some people i dont know in
3d world countries...

No joke..

This i could actually spend some of
the money "i dont have" on...
IF, i was 100% sure they actually
reached the inteded people..

On the other hand why not build an entire
purificationplant based on the tech?

Raise the money needed..
Hire the locals to build it..
And then let THEM manage it..

This is much needed in India, as they gather water only once or twice a day...

We in the Western Nations have access to water that we complain about, they have to wait for the taps to turn on or gather it from a well shared by the community.

Nano technology is the future of more Scientific discoveries yet to be revealed.

This would definitely help the low income village part of India, as some of them have to wait for water trucks(weekly) or need to get well water(which is actually very clean).

But if these guys give this out as free or somehow discounted price then it would be a good thing. but i know some a-hole gonna abuse and get lot of money out of it.

Lol I do not think they are on the shelves yet.

I do not understand why they do not just do that instead. That sounds like it would be better for all concerned. However I doubt that will actually happen. They do not want it to happen. It is frustrating really.. But what can we do..!

I agree with you a 100%. Science is on the one hand creating absolute wonders for the world. But like everything it has a dark side (BigPharma/GMOetc)...

This is a step in the right direction..! And it is funny I notice that many of the new scientific developments that have been created and invented for those striving for basic human needs in third world countries. Have usually been created by researchers and scientists who originate from and live in that country...

Oh it would be a huge help for many people worldwide. Especially if they are going to be distributing it for free or very little. They have not given a exact cost of the system - all they have said is that the processing cost is less than $3.00. So it does not really give us any indication of how much the system will cost or the replacement filters. With that being said I am sure they will try to keep the price as low as possible..

Hopefully the a-hole will never catch wind of it..! I have my fingers crossed that this new water purification system will be in the manufacturers sooner rather than later..

Can OP deliver... I want one! Where can I get one please Fluff.. Nanotech will change the world in ways we cannot even conceive yet. This is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the nanorevolution..

Because there is the infrastructure in the form of underground mains water pipes. These could be used to process water pumped out of underwater aquifers.
