Two days ago, my water started tasting different. I used to use a brita filter and get at least decent tasting water. now, brita or not, the water tastes like it's almost entirely fluoride. Remember swishing fluoride as a kid? Well, I get this same chemical "stinging" (but it doesn't really sting...) after drinking a glass of water. It tastes like it has been strongly spiked with sodium fluoride.

Has anyone noticed weird changes in your water supply? I've also developed a lot of red bumps on my chest in the past week after showering.

Could always send a sample to a lab.

The fluoride being added to the water supplies is computer controlled and the guys are supposed to monitor it's level. Maybe someone is on vacation and a substitute guy is watching over things. The safeguards at those places don't always work. They work most of the time. I don't think the equipment can even put out a dose that is lethal to people, just enough to give longterm consumption problems. I'll ask my friend who works at the water treatment plant more about it when I see him next. He is actually a believer in fluoride, feeling that the levels are way to low.

I always find it funny how someone can be a "believer" in fluoride. It's a small enough amount you say? When you brush your teeth you're suppose to use a PEA size amount of toothpaste as per the instructions and it also says DO NOT SWALLOW because there is a tiny minuscule amount of fluoride in a pea sized amount of toothpaste. But we are suppose to believe we should drink it? If your toothpaste says not to swallow why should we be drinking glasses of it?

Where is the logic?

Did you know if a newborn swallows a pea size amount of toothpaste with fluoride they have a very good chance of dying? It's true, now drink up that poison with a smile.

As if the government ever used logic for the "laws" they pass on the rest of us. Follow the money, and you will see your logic.

i haven't noticed any difference in my water, the only differences are from city to city. yes there is fluoride in the water but very little. there is tons of other chemicals that seem way more scary then fluoride to kill off pathogens. and water smelling weird? they could have flushed a main or something. i took a few classes on water treatment and distribution in college.

I have never heard of anyone's water tasting like fluoride, that's odd.

I live in Virginia and for the past month or so my water has tasted extra chloriney.

Edit:

And here is the reason why:

The annual conversion to free chlorine as the primary disinfectant in the drinking water treatment process is underway and will continue through June 2013. The water PWCSA provides its customers is treated by Fairfax Water and the City of Manassas, and both use chloramines in their water treatment processes during most of the year. Using chloramines is a better long-term option because they remain in the water distribution system longer and produce lower levels of disinfection by-products. Free chlorine is a more aggressive disinfectant, and this temporary change in the water treatment process helps prevent bacteria from becoming overly resistant.

You might want to test the ph of your water. You can also get a tds meter to check ppm, and they are pretty cheap. They also sell drinking water test kits which can be around $10, which will test the ph, bateria, lead and other contaminates. Personally I never drink from the tap given all the poisons the water companies inject into the supply..

If you are that concerned with the water being toxic, just distill it and you will have pure water to consume. It will be void of minerals as well, but it won't have any harmful chemicals left in it either.

Really strange that you posted this.

I recently noticed a drastic change in the taste/smell of my tap water in So Cal. The water now stinks of chemicals and is hard to put down. I have been drinking this water for the past year straight daily and in the last week noticed a significant change in the taste/smell of it. It almost smells like pool water
. Looks like I need to switch back to $0.80/Gal bottled water.

I recently read that brita filters have flouride in them.

Also forgot to reply to OP. Flouride is supposed to be "Odorless, Tasteless, & Colorless". You might be tasting/smelling more Chlorine/Chlorine compounds/Chlorine Alternatives in your water or some completely different substance.

Lots of rain or flooding lately? At some point storm sewers may become over-saturated, and instead of going to treatment, the overflow gets dumped. A lot of that may end up in the local water supply. (Particularly if local water is sourced from a river or large lake.)

In such cases, water treatment plants do what they call "hyper-chlorination". Basically it's adding a lot of extra chlorine to deal with the extra influx of bacteria which includes nasty stuff like cholera that comes from the flood muck getting into the water supply. At times it's quite noticeable, but it's only meant to be a temporary preventative measure. Once the local water sources settle down in terms of turbidity and contaminants, they should dial the chlorine back down to normal levels.

Not the best thing, but it beats having an outbreak of waterborne illness from crap getting into the freshwater pipeline system.

Now if it's like that without any flooding, then yeah I'd be a bit more concerned.

Given the incompetence (at best) of those running our infrastructure and government, you would do well to install water purification equipment in your home. Reverse Osmosis and distillation can take care of significant pollution and other poisons. Winn Dixie sells gallon jugs of water that has been distilled and run thru reverse osmosis.

Any effort to reduce exposure to these toxins is helpful, but just drinking treated water is not enough. Your skin is an organ and can absorb poisons while bathing.

As others have stated, get a lab test.

Hey everyone.

No, I'm certain it's flouride. It smells like pool water from the chlorine (I keep fish, I notice this filling my larger tanks) Flouride has a very specific taste. It's disgusting. It kinda burns your cheeks, makes your tongue feel like velvet and the aftertaste is just constant, bitter, stinging awful.

Flouride is not good for your teeth. Check up on human osteology (specifically odontology) you'll find that the layer of enamel cannot be rebuilt. the ameloblasts become completely dormant once they've laid down enamel. Then, they gradually become replace by odontoblasts, which make the slightly softer dentin later, and those DO become rebuilt. and flouride replaces the hydroxyl group and forms flouroapetite. It just replaces the piezoelectric calcium apetite end of the mineral and builds up, 'hardening' the enamel. It literally builds up and sticks around in osteological tissue.

Whenever my washing machine is on, my water smells like bleach (or chlorine, or whatever else smells bad), but it doesn't taste too different.. Just a little thicker, but that's it.
I think it could be a filter or something innocent enough
