Bear in mind that around AD 70 and the Jewish revolt, the Romans came and pretty much laid the country of Israel/Judea into a wasteland. Gold artifacts taken from the second temple were used to fund the construction of many things in Rome, including the Colosseum.

This went on for quite a while as Rome reconstituted the region as Palestine. During this time, ancient religious texts/scrolls were destroyed... which accounts for the way that Dead Sea Scrolls were so carefully hidden.

The First century AD was a violent time in what we today call, The Holy Land.

I would look to the Vatican as the likely repository of most surviving documents from the period in question. They have the most to gain, or lose, from them.

Strange that an institution supposedly based around truth and openness has so much to hide. Why would they seal the Vatican library if there is nothing to hide?

Hmmmm.... me thinks that they are hiding things that would damage their reputation.

That would be my guess too.

But hey, maybe they're not as bad and shady as we think and just forgot where they put the key, but somehow I doubt that.

We have Josephus a Jewish historian who wrote from the 1st century and also many Rome documents from that time.
