Number 2, where you tell how they are on their way to us as we are on our way to them and meet somewhere in between. Excellent ! This is excellent sub plotting and kind of reminds me a bit of "Stargate Universe" of the race that kept dogging them through the galaxy. But the plot you describe here is a good one and you should use it.

the same idea (premise) can be splintered and snowballed into various different stories when utilized by various people. Go. Write. Just do it.
