Would chimps go beyond simple vocalizations, face expressions or body postures without our intervention ?
Based on the fossil record, the split between chimps' ancestors and those of ancestors of humans and Neanderthals is thought to have occurred some 5 million to 6 million years ago.

Chimps have picked up a language, many of them speak sign.
Yeah. Plus, we know that prairie dogs have a language. Actually, without some form of communication animals couldn't live in packs and prides and herds.
What both amazes and baffles me is how a dog can just look at another dog (a Chihuahua looking at a St. Bernard) and recognize its own kind.edit on 4/20/2013 by jiggerj because: (no reason given)

Do they? Can they do it with pictures, and without smell?
In the flesh, dogs can smell and see if they act like dogs. In domesticated dogs' experience, living things that walk are only a few categories:
a) dogs (play/hump)
b) humans (play/beg)
c) medium animals with claws, cats & raccoon (careful chasing them)
d) small crawlies like rats/mice/possum/rabbits/gophers (whoo hoo! go for it)
e) stupid big herd animal (bark & herd, if a working shepherd dog)
f) ??? (bark like heck)
Decision making process is not that difficult. If in doubt they see what other dogs and their humans are doing, react the same.
