They fudged the numbers by using a "functional" genome size rather than actual genome size. Use the actual genome size and the 9.7 billion goes the way of the dinosaur.

It's a nice idea but an extrapolation too far I think.

The very first prokaryotes on Earth were likely as simple as life can be therefore unable to be reduced in complexity and still be considered as 'life'. If we are to stretch the origins graph into non living entities then we might as well start the graph at the beginning of the universe.

Also, as another poster noticed, plants are missing from the rather empty plot and I guess they would have skewed the results significantly.

There is one major flaw in this theory of the beginning of the 'timeline'. There is no beginning just as there is no end. The theory of 'the beginning' is what throws all possibility of a rational explanation of how we got here into chaos. The Big Bang Theory is the theory of the ancient babylonians and possibly whatever civilisaton made up that story before them, and before them and before them.........Understand Eternity. Eternity means there is no beginning and no end hence no alpha and no omega. Start on that premise and everything else becomes possible.
