The US military says guards have clashed with prisoners at Guantanamo as officers were moving detainees from communal to single cells in attempt to end a hunger strike that started in February.

The detainees used self-made weapons to resist the transfer, thus forcing guards to fire, the US military said in a statement.

"Some detainees resisted with improvised weapons, and in response, four less-than-lethal rounds were fired," Navy Captain Robert Durand said in a news release.

Officials say no guards or detainees have been seriously injured.

I've searched quite a bit before posting and can't see any mention of this on here, apologies if it has, but I think this is a topic which deserves discussion.

There's a lot of disturbing details - the fact the cameras were "covered up by prisoners" meaning there's no need to provide evidence either way, the use of "less than lethal rounds" - is that just a strange term of phrase to describe non lethal rounds - or are they talking about low caliber bullets?
The fact that they were being moved shortly after the Red Cross left which heavily implies they were only allowed on the communal wing to begin with because the Red Cross were coming and were moved out as soon as they were gone...

So yeah, thoughts etc?
Personally I find it ties in quite nicely with the whole Thatcher thing, since one of the more famous points in her career as PM was 1981 IRA hunger strike.

Oh and just because I know its going to come up (because these things always do) - yes I am British - and before anyone mentions WW2 - the US was charging us war debt up until 2006 to the tune of $7.5 Billion so you can't really use that argument any more.

They were referring to "bean bag" rounds and modified shotgun shells that shoot rubber pellets.

Yeah, they call them less than lethal for a reason.

If you shoot someone in the head or neck with them, they tend to expire.

Good to hear, "less-than-lethal" makes it sound much worse than it is!
Although now I look into it more, it seems quite a common term, are they not called non-lethal anymore or is there a distinction between the two?

Aha, the post above me clears it up!

The prisoners are given the inside plastic part of a pen and paper to write with and not much else, so how can they make weapons with that? Guards will have covered the cameras up, not them.

What if that was Americans in some God forsaken place being treated like that? What happened to the Geneva Convention? This just disgusts me no end. No one deserves to be treated like they are, regardless of what they are supposed to have done and I don't even believe they are supposed to be still there anyway.

Where are the prisoners trials and if they cannot be charged with any offense, why are they in prison to start with? This is false imprisonment.. How would you like to be locked up with out any legitimate reason? They have released others, whats so different about these people?

Not really. They are pretty awful. A lot of them are metal balls, like ball bearings coated in rubber. They aren't just solid rubber they are dangerous and super painful. If they hit vital areas they will kill a person easily. They are only supposed to be used on the lower body.
