America has always been a socially liberal country. Our inception was in it's day a socially liberal movement. Throughout our history, progressivism
has dominated the culture, moving us ever forward in a socially liberal way.
But throughout this great experiment, there has always been people who fought against change, and have worked against social liberalism. They fear
change, with good reason. Change is a scary idea. It takes courage to embrace change, this courage fails in many, as they fear the unknown and fear
what will become of the life they once knew.
It's this fear, this terror that makes these people wary of any type of change, whether it be immigrants from unpopular nations, or social freedoms
going to groups they would like to ostracize.
Today another social change is taking place, today we are deciding as a nation whether or not same sex couples will have the same freedom to marry as
heterosexual couples.
So, in step with the long tradition that social conservatives have about dealing with fear, they try to project that fear to the nation. They try and
suggest that if we as a nation give homosexual couples the freedom to marry, then that would lead to people being able to marry goats, or inanimate
objects.
It's this fear that is the failure of Social Conservatism. It's this fear that is not a part of this great nation. It's this fear that we must
overcome.
Having personal beliefs is fine. No one is going to force any heterosexual person to marry someone of their same gender. Just as giving couples of
different races didn't destroy this nation, this issue won't either.
Liberty must be liberty for all, or it's not liberty. Being afraid of change isn't American.
