Student IDs

Let�s put this down as a big WTF.

POPLAR BLUFF, Missouri (AP) -- A new policy at a high school requiring students to wear identification badges has prompted some parents to complain and students to protest the move as an infringement on their rights.
The badges, which are identical to the IDs students have always been required to carry and use to check out library books at Poplar Bluff High School, are now required to be worn on campus during school hours.

WTF are these parents thinking? I do a lot of work in the a Large City Public school system. Even the elementary schools have metal detectors. All the schools have guards and you are required to sign in and wear a visitor badge.

While the elementary schools don�t require the kids to wear visible IDs, all of the high schools do.

What is going to happen when these kids go out and get real jobs? Are they going to complain because their employers make them wear IDs?

I agree. These kids are complaining about wearing a school badge, at school, which is they same one they've always carried in their pocket and had to produce upon demand anyway. Then after their done complaining, they're going to put on their mcdonalds badge and go to work. I had to wear a badge in school, it was no big deal.

Well said. I've been required to wear a badge at work for quite a while. If you visit any hospital, 100% personnel wear them. All right it doesn't look sexy, but it's a security matter.

Hmm... why don't we just start tattooing numbers on people or giving them barcodes? A high school is a place for KIDS. Yes, they are 13 through 18, but they are still considered the children in the US, and do not need to be forced to wear ID badges in classrooms. Administrators and teachers should get to know and recognize their students, and if there are too many to effectively deal with, then make the school smaller. Having an ID badge to check out a library book is one thing, but being forced to wear it is another.

Also, while many people are required to wear ID badges at work, thats at WORK, and not in the school system. Let them wear badges once they enter a workplace, but it shouldn't be mandatory at a school. Hospital staff wear badges to protect the safety of patients and to let others know what areas they are allowed to access.

What happens if the student loses, forgets, or destroys their badge as high school kids are prone to do?

What about security of the child? Do they take it off immediately upon leaving the school, or is their name and school visible for all to see as they walk home or go to the mall to hang out with friends?

What is the point of the badges? To identify students? To stop violence? To prevent firearms from coming in the school? To keep kids off drugs? What difference could these badges make other than to add to the manufactured fear and paranoia that people carry around with them every day?

Before everyone tells me I went to High School in some perfect little town with no problems, I watched a girl snort coke in my 7th grade home economics class, the SWAT team surrounded us at least once while I was there, the principal was sued for millions over a racist mascot we supposedly had (Johnny Reb for our football team the "Rebels") Yay racial tension!, a senior was caught with a gun in his locker...... ID badges wouldn't have prevented any of that, and can't prevent any of that.

You shouldn't have to wear one. What could wearing one prevent? A kid could still come to school and shoot it up even if he was wearing a badge. I have carried a little card in my wallet for 7 years for school and it's no big deal. What exactly is the teachers goal with this? Although many times there are visitors in our school we only have a graduating class of about 140 so everybody knows everybody and a teacher knows if a kid is just visiting.

An increasing problem in many high schools is non-students coming on campus starting trouble, selling drugs, etc. This is an effort to curb that, and frankly, it seems like a good idea. The majority of them will eventually be wearing a badge of some sort at work anyhow, so it's really more like prep for the real world. Just as with a work badge, you have the option of not having it out when off school grounds.... Sure, it won't stop it, but it may help reduce such problems, and at least make kids a bit safer without worrying about off-campus hooligans.

Seems like a good idea to me. Back when I was in high school, students from other schools would constantly come over in groups to start fights with people. If I had a child I would have no problem with this.

I don't understand how wearing an ID badge infringes on ANY FREEDOM?
It's just an ID badge.

when i went to high school (grad in 03) we were "required" to wear our ids everywhere on campus. but it was a joke. only about 5 or 6 (that i saw) wore their ids proudly while the rest of us laughed. the reasoning behind it was they wanted to know who was supposed to be there and who wasnt. but since no one wore them the situation blew over. the principals couldnt do anything about it. at first they sent kids home but soon they would have had to send the whole school home. anyways, i thought it was stupid and to hear that it is happening in different places i think that its even stupider. anyone with a computer and 15 min could make a fake school id.

badges are cool.

Conversations won't be restricted to just a select few. In wearing badges you don't need someone to introduce you and $hit like that, since you know everyones name as it is on the badge.
